if i ever saw IFS on a pre-84 4x4, i'd lose my mind and go on a shooting rampage :flamer:

I swear by solid axles, but......I went on a run that involved steep climbs, lots of rocks and good off camber stuff.  I'm welded front/rear, 35s, marlin, crossover/histeer, etc. and one of the people on the run, a girl, was behind me in a 86 ifs, 35s, 4.10s and a powertrax in the rear, open front.  She was right behind me the whole time without missing a beat.  I was really surprised to see how well that ifs rig did on the technical stuff.  She also kicked some serious butt up at funny rocks-after copius amounts of brew and a heavy foot!!  I personally prefer the solid since it's easier to work on, parts are plentiful, and you can't beat leaf springs.

I don't think i have ever heard anyone say that Brainless...of course I'm only 20.  I hope it is a long bed, and not a shortbed....then maybe i could understand just a bit....just a little bit. :headscratch:

Anyway, bottom line Chaos is:   SA is better for rockcrawling,  IFS is better for DD and high speed desert racing.  If you plan on getting really serious into rockcrawling type stff, do the swap...otherwise, you probably wont ever need it   (just wheel with good spotters).  First, put in a rear locker, and see how you do, then go from there.

Oh i go off road, even with my cab-over on it! or towing my tent trailer too. but big time trail running? don't think so.   It gets me where the quail and ducks are aright.  :psss:

nobody with 22 gets the power they want! well almost nobody

brainlessfool

anit that the truth!  with the 4:88s in it she truns about 3K rpm at 58 mph. so it pulls ok but yes a little more power would be nice. it does better with the tent trailer than with the cab-over on it. camper has more wind hitting it. but I love having the camper out in the back 40 after a long day of duck hunting!

A 410 is still a shotgun, but not by much. j/k brainless.  First time I ever shot a shotgun I shot my dads 12g and I couldn't miss a clay pigeon if I wanted to.  He gave it to me that day.

Sorry about the off topic post.  If you were at all considering doing a SAS on your truck, go for it.  If you're worried about losing your on-road comfort then you don't wheel hard enough to need it.  I am more worried about how my truck acts off-road then on road.  You want it to be fairly streetable though.  I think someone else said this, but driving style is also a factor.  If you like dirt roads and mud keep the IFS, if you like off camber trails and rocks, go with a SFA.   :twocents:

SWAMPER

Well I like mud, and rocks, and off camber trails...what then  :headscratch:

Then solid axle it.  The solid axle will do great in mud and dirt roads.  But it will just outperform the IFS in the rocks and off camber trails.

SWAMPER

Well since it would proly be my DD for a couple more years how about a Heavy Duty IFS kit like the one the dessert runners use? I know downey makes a kit and theres a thread about it but just wanted to get more ppl to konw

Thanks for all your input Do you guys ever watch 4 wheeler TV on the outdoor channel there is this guy I believe his name is Walker Evans who has a rig with a fully independent suspension front and rear granted it has some crazy articulation it flew up those rocks in Moab. I also stop and was thinking why did the military put IFS in the highly capable HUMVEE granted the HUMVEE has a fully independent suspension system to die for. The Newer Toys do not come with torsion bars anymore so cranking up the torsion bars is out. Only thing I do not like about my IFS is when going around a corner at a decent rate of speed and you hit a pothole it feels like you are on a boat. I am seeing more and more IFS Toys going place were solid front vehicles are going.

brainlessfool

like I've said, don't discount the IFS. if it had a bigger diff. in it I'd beat that you'd see more ppl keeping them!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    There able to jump tall rocks in a single bound.  faster than a jack rabbit.  stronger than a 2wd front end.

LOOK, up in the hills.....IT'S    IFS!!!

Well if I can get my hairy little hands on the hummer set up the Idea of get SAS for LilSwamper is out the window....I wonder how much it will cost?  :headscratch:

The military switched over to ifs for the same reasons that desert racers do.  High speed stability and static ground clearance.

Brainless dont you remember Scott from rockstomper's truck?  He had a totally custom setup from the chromolly arms to the 930 cv's and ford 9" diff.  It still sucked and broke oftern.  Scott was very determined to keep the ifs and to show everyone it was a good setup.  That truck now has a solid axle.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

:slap: You have to ruin my dreams right WT....jk he proly wheels harder than me though and beside I wont wheel Swamper that hard hes my DD and If I do find a P/U to make my trail rig Swamper would be my tow rig too  ;)

kinda rings a bell, but the ? is like swampy said "how hard does he wheel?" that goes for anyone in a truck. inspite of what front end they have.  for what I did with my 86 I never needed any more than it had,...ok,ok so I'm a  :stopit: wheeler. so what  :smack: it's just not my thing to go and try to brake stuff every weekend. that does not mean that I just hag at the mall, no in fact some times I make it to the PARK!!!   :hahaha:   but I beat I could run a nice IFS truck  almost anywhere that a sa truck could go. but not as fast or as "hard"  I just don't like braking things I have to fix! no one payes me to fix my junk  :-\\

i remember reading lots about scotts truck back in the day.i also remember ready a post close to this over on pbb that he responded to about what fails in pretty much the order they fail.i beleive the last thing he had problems with was ripping control arm mounts off the frame.i could be wrong.any one that saw even just pics of that truck knew its was sick.personally thats the sickest stock ifs type setup ive ever seen.that truck also got wheeled alot harder than most people that had ifs would even dream.

that was my point, you can brake ANYTHING if you try hard enuf. granted a IFS will brake before a SA. but if your not driving it that hard then way go to all the work of a SAS other then the  :eyebrow: factor.   not that there is anything wrong with the  :eyebrow: factor.
