Switching from early axle to late IFS style
« on: Mar 09, 2008, 05:48:45 PM »
I'm kicking around the idea of changing my rear axle this summer (narrow 85) to the later IFS wider style. Mostly I want to do this to get rid of the rear wheel spacers, upgrade to the stronger V6 third while upgrading to a Trutrac or ARB locker. I would like to build the complete axle and just swap it all at once.

Are any spring mount changes required?

Any driveshaft mods required?

Can I still use the LPSV since this is a daily driver and not a rock crawler?

Is this a plug and play swap basically?

Thanks for the input everyone. One more question:

What about the e-brake do I need the late cables or could I use my old ones?

BTW This is an 85

The cable that is on the ifs axle needs to be used. The one on the 85 axle is about 3 inches too short. You do not need to change the cable that goes from the handle to the rear axle cable. other than that, its all bolt on and go. I used the u-bolt plates from the ifs rear as well, because the ifs rear is a larger diameter. You can grind the 85 plate to fit the ifs rear axle.

or if you dont want to change the cable just take two: 1 1\2in long by 1\2in wide 1\8 inch thick flat bar and drill two holes in them and bam!!! you throw two more pins in and you've compensated for the extra 3 inches.... thats what i did and my ebrake rocks!
