I saw an 83 Toy with this setup and was wondering what it is supposed to acomplish exactaly, I've never seen this before. The shock is mounted at the top of the spring center strap and on the frame rail at a slant.

Hmmm I would suppose it would help combatting axle wrap a little bit but not at that angle effectively.  Many companies make traction shock mounts that mount to the spring plate and then mount to theframe just above the front spring mount.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

ok, I figured it was a something to do with axle wrap, but all I've seen are bar-style setups, ladder, single double etc, never seen one that used shocks. It seemed to me like these shocks would work out of sync with the regular ones, especially since he has his mounted "V"-style from a custom crosmember. This one was definatly homebrew. Thanks WT

Rancho sold a "traction shock" kit for years, heck they probobly still do.  It works pretty well until you add lift blocks then they cant overcome the added leverage.
