Squeeky, Hard to press Clutch Pedal
« on: Jun 29, 2004, 10:35:23 AM »
On top of my junk transmission, if anybody's got a solution to that damn squeeky clutch pedal that feels like I'm leg pressing 100lbs every time I step on it PLEASE let me know!

For the squeek I tried spraying everything I could see under the dash that has to do with the clutch pedal linkage, but it didn't even help a bit!

And as for the pedal being hard to push, I'm assuming it's either the clutch slave or master or maybe the release bearing is crap because I can hear it whirring and squeeking whenever the pedal is up.

I'll be in there when I do the trans so I guess that would be as good a time as ever.

Yup it could be the release bearing..

A tip is to get some anti-seize and mix that with some assembly grease and put that on the nose cone where the bearing rests.....also on the spline of the trans input shaft where the clutch disk is going to be in contact.

Anyone ever hear or use Exedy clutches or should I just go staright to Toyota? I'd get a heavy duty from Marlin, but when I'm not escaping to NH, I'm driving through the city too much.

Well, im my opinion Exedy is the best Japanese clutch manufacture in Japan. Their typical slam-it-together kit is actually very very high quality. All of their clutch disks are very well constructed and very high quality.

I am assuming that they dont really have any lower end clutch kits though.. I've only heard of them selling high performance clutches that cost $275+ so if your looking at a kit that's $150 or something then I dont know about that.

But with Exedy you pay more for great quality. In case your wondering how I have experience, I am using an Exedy 4-pluck kevlar clutch in my MR2. Night and day difference between the Exedy and the TRD wanna-be kevlar racing disk. TRD is the worst aftermarket company as far as Im concerned when it comes to quality. My Exedy grabs so well, has lasted a long time, and never slipped not even once with my Stage 2.5 engine.

BigMike

Hmm...that's good to hear..I think... The kit I bought was around  $160 and included the plate, disk, realease and pilot bearings. It definately wasn't a performance part. I called Toyota to get a price on their parts and it was roughly twice as much.

Sounds like you've had a good experience with Exedy though.

84: Yes, my disk is spring loaded with internal springs as well. Dual springs x4... The kevlar growls at me when I slip it in the morning when its cold, but once you get it warmed up, its either on or off. Shifting is extremely smooth at speed.

4by20: $160 for any complete clutch kit is an amazing prices! :o You should buy more and then retail them youself!

The most common problem with a hard clutch pedal is a worn, dirty, and gaulded pressure plate pivot ring. This cannot be serviced [it is part of the pressure plate ] and is a big reason to always insist on a new pressure plate.

After thousands of miles in use, the wore lining from the disk travels outward due to the centrifical force and gets stuck in this pivot area in the pressure plate.

On a new cover, this is snooth and lubercated but in time and use, this can be the main problem of a hard pedal.

Remember to always grease the nose cone and the coller of the release bearing as well as the pivot stud of the fork.

Thanks again Marlin! This really clears things up for me. I'll take special care to grease those parts when we do the clutch.
