You can mount up to a 35 inside, any bigger outside. Unless you run it topless.

i like the swing out spare tire carriers personally.

for inside strap the tire to the side of the rollbar, 35 is very snug right there.

On top makes it too top heavy, I left mine underneath a 33 will fit. My brother welded an arm and a mount from the rollbar and put it there, he had 35's and it just fit.

I think 90-91 4runners had a factory optional swing out tailgate spare tire mount.  try and find one at a junkyard or see if you can still get it from Toyota.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

My Runner is bobbed 10" so I couldn't mount it like Fearofrunner's. I welded some hooks at the base of my rollbar and laid the tire flat in the back and strapped it down. looks like an X on the top of the tire if you were looking down on it from the sky. I liked the look of my runner without a spare tire showing so I did it this way.
Oh ya it is a 35" tire.

Well then you have 2 choices

1. Make it a right hand drive

2. Take some of the weight out of the driver

I would do this one, It keeps the weight more centralized, and it will not affect departure angle or rear view mirror viewing.

Here are my three solutions :gap:
1. A 31" with lots of room (how many times do you really get a flat and its lite):

2. A 37" upright (heavy and blocks your view):

3. Or just carry plenty of plugs and leave the spare on the trailer.
