Ignition switch - Need Key Cyllinder/mechanism.
« on: Feb 26, 2008, 03:00:36 PM »
Mine's dead but I need one for a 1987 4runner (or similar - as long as it fits) that's in good condition and isn't also about to fall apart like mine did.

No, the actual key mechanism.  The internal return spring is shot and I can do things like pull the key out while it's running.

Yeah, it does.  Still comes out.  lol.  It's pretty beat up since the previous owner had a keyring the size of a softball.

You do know they sell them at most auto parts stores. I dont think they cost that much. Anyways I have a new one set up that was for a first gen. If you think It will work let me know and I will get you a price.

Is yours in your column or in the dash?  If in the column, I have one in my 86, but I'll have to check and see if it has the lock or not and get back to you.

If it is original, take the lock cyl out of the passanger side door and there will be a code stamped into the HOUSING.  Take this code to either the dealership or a good locksmith and have a key cut to the original specs.  Then take the lock cyl out and have a lock smith rebuild it with new pins and springs and this should make the cyl like new.  If the housing is too worn, buy one from a parts store and have the locksmith re-key it to the code cut key.  It never hurts to rebuild the drivers door cyl at they same time because they are the first 2 to wear out and make it easy for thieves to take our vehicles.  FYI I work for a Toyota dealership and do this on a regular basis.  The cutting of the key may be a little on the pricey side but like a master key don't use this one and wear it out.  Keep it as a spaire and cut the ones you use, and wear out, at wal-mart.  A good lock smith in the Fresno area that can do all this is Advanced Lock and Safe (559)779-5760.  One man company and is always busy but highly recommended.

Thanks.  I think I'll see if a shop can fix it at this point, because it's not totally dead.  Just "mostly dead"...

Now, where's Miracle Max when you need him....

Well, I don't get paid for a week, so I'll figure it out then I guess.  :)

A full set of locks, though, would be ideal - save me having to re-key.  I'm figuring someone here *might* have a full set from one of their donors or something for cheap.  It's an 87 in the column, with the little black button I have to (usually) press to remove the key.

The passenger door isn't the right key, nor is the fuel door(though the inside latch works to open it).  So pretty much a full set.

Oh - they're power locks on the doors - does that make a significant difference?
