1979 ignition switch
« on: Jun 02, 2021, 03:21:27 PM »
Howdy -
Working on my 79 and having a couple electrical gremlins - not much of a surprise.
#1  -   With 42 years and a few twists of the key, I'm thinking the ignition switch is going.  Does anyone have info on what the resistance should be when testing the switch in different settings, i.e., Off, Acc, Run, Start?
#2 -   An overcharging situation with the alternator.  Have replaced the alternator and the external regulator with parts matching what came on the truck.  I've driven it 4-5 years with no problems until now.  Showing 18 volts at the alternator and battery, so not driving it as I don't want to cook the battery.  Thinking there's a ground somewhere, but haven't uncovered anything out in the engine compartment nor under the dash - short of pulling the wiring harness and checking every connector.  As is usual, the wiring harness has been hacked into by previous owners, so not sure what all has been 'upgraded'.
Thanks for any advice!

The positions on the switch should either be infiinity or 0 ohms

Thanks, Ed -
Sorry it took so long to reply. Haven't been on-line for a month or so.  Plenty to take care of living next to the national forest in prepping for the wildfire season which is already upon us.....
