How big should I go or how big is to big?
« on: Jun 28, 2004, 08:52:02 PM »
Hi I'm new. I was wondering if it would be over kill to use aor's 6" orbit eyes with orbit eyes in both ends of the spring with a two inch body lift and 3 inch lift shackles. i would be using dana 44 front and rear and be running 38.5" tires with 5.29 ring and pinion with a detriot in the rear. this would still be my daly driver and my weekend toy.
87 runner, 4" trailmaster lift, 33" TSL/SX, 5.29's V6 e-locker, 22re that cost too much

well running the 6 inch springs with orbit eyes in both ends might cause it too lean pretty bad side too side cornering i would think sence they pivot but havent really seen any trucks around here with them yet, and thats alot of lift too have on a daily driver but with the dana 44's if u stay full width u might be allright because you will have the high lift yes but will be pretty wide especally with 38 inch tires i take it ur wanting too run the 38.5 sx's which are pretty wide too so you should be ok.
Good luck with ur swap and tell us how it goes.
If you didn't make it, and it ain't broke, you didn't try hard enough.

I think that much lift will be just fine if your gonna run 38's , especially after they settle

Holy monster truck batman!  It would be cool but way too top heavy.  Just think 9" of lift?!  Ive got about 6" on my 84 and Ive ran 39.5" tsl's with no issues with rubbing, my 90 has about 3 3/4" with 38x12.5's.  No real issues with hitting sheetmetal there either.

I'm with you WT... 9" is extreme. Here is my Bro's with 5" lift, 2" body, and 2-3" shackles:

http://www.wildyoats.com/chad_egli.htm

I would go with 5-6" of susp and 2" body lift for now. After that, use the shackle lifts to fine tune everything.

for reference these are 38's on STOCK lift springs (wagoneer and chevy) with blocks in the rear and a drop hanger up front.

so ya think it would be way over kill for my daily driver. so you think a 6" suspention with 2" body would fit the 38.5" sx tires with no rubbing. and what is your guys opinion on the orbit eye springs and if the are worth the extra money.

Nahh youd get used to the high center of gravity on hte street but off road youd just flop.  Aor springs are very good but even they dont recomend orbit eyes in both ends for the street.  Id use their 3-4" standard length rears up front and their longer rears in the back.  That would be pretty killer.  Im all for longer shackles as well just dont over do it on the length.  I try and keep the length to a max of 8" eye to eye.  As for a body lift my 84 has 3" but the 90 has 3/4".  I try and not use too much body lift as a rule but the 84 has a 350 so its basically mandatory.

basically you want to get the biggest tires you can get while trying to keep the center of gravity low.  I would try to become friends with a SAWZALL and a BFH

Here's my 90 with 38x12.5's.  The tires do make a bit of contact as of now but not after tonight, Mr. sawzall is coming out to play.

I have 5" lift with 38sx's and I cut both front and rear fenders out about 5" and I remove the rear fender wells and moved the front fender wells back about 4" to the body mount under the cab and I still rub in the front.

Boy I really spaced that one , I thought it was only 6" suspension I didn't notice you said 3" body and then lift shackles. That would be to much. I run 36X12.5 and 5" springs and 1 1/2" shackles with no body lift. A little fender trimming and it's all good. I actually cant wait until my springs sit almost flat cause there broke in. And as for the orbit eyes they will help keep your springs from twisting up and keep the temper in them longer.

It depends on what kind of wheeling you do. I would not recommend that height for rocks or tight wooded trails but if you do only open mud pits you should be fine. Also check with your local authorities to see what is a street legal height. Good luck and tell us how you make out

Here in WA if youhave your bumpers below legal height, mudflaps and non obnoxious exhaust you can pretty much drive anything.

My truck only has 6 inch in the front and about 7-8 in the back.  I am only running 35's but i could probly fit 37's using a BFH.  I am going to lift it a little more in the front using rear springs so it flex's better then i will be done with the suspension for now.  No body lift.

I think it was stated earlier but double orbit eyes is not reccommended by them.  I think that would be a little too unstable for my preference
