MARLIN, HELP!,
I just bought a 95 Runner V6 5spd. Love the truck..wish I bought one sooner!
Only problem is it whines in every gear except 4th. Sounds like a firetruck siren in first, and 2nd....real quiet whine in 3d and 5th.
I read your diagniosis on a W-56 trans with the same problem. You said basicly once the bearings go, the teeth start to wear and you can replace the bearings all you want, the whine comes back unless you completely rebuild the thing. Is it the same story with the R-150?

yotaboy79

im not marlin but im pritty shure i know his answer although i could be wrong but i think his answer would be
yup same story

:psss: Dont listen to YOtaboy he is on  :moon:  hehehe jk I also think its going to be the same thingy

One of the problems with the R150F V6 trans-t/case assmble is that there is a dead air space between the back of the trans and the front of the chain driven t/case. After hundreds of thousands of miles, the rear output seal gets hard and lets trans oil leak into this area between the boxes. From the factory, there is a gasket between the trans and t/case so it is possible to run the truck with very low trans oil without any visual leaks.

Running the trans low on oil will result in the input gear, and front countershaft gear, [also called constant run gears], to become overheated and begin to transfer metal. Once this happens, the input and countershaft are scrap and must be replaced.

Because of the large oversize bearings found in the R transmission series, bearing failure has not been a common problem like in all other L, G, and W transmissions.

Check the trans oil level and if it smells burned.
Changing the oil is always a great idea and only costs a few bucks although it will not correct your noise.

Because the countrshaft is not used in 4th gear, there will not be any noise, and since 4th is straight thur the trans, there is no load on the bearings so it still could be bad gears or bearings.

Time to pull the trans, tear it apart, and do it right.

Thanks all!
I checked the trans fluid, it's full and smells like a machine shop..not sure if it's burned, but I'll change the fluid anyway. Hopefully it'll keep me goin untill I can get another trans.

Marlin: Thanks so much, I appreciate your indepth description. Looks like I may be purchasing one of your rebuilt transmissions in the near future.

Oh yeah..tons-o-fun Lilswamper  ;)

Use 80-90W GL5 oil if you go Mineral, or, Amsoil / Redline 75-90W if you go synthetic.

Synthetic oils should only be used in items that are already broken in (such as your transmisison).

If you use mineral, make sure its GL5 quality!

I just ordered a rebuilt R150F from Marlin, so I'll definately go with the 80-90W GL5. I appreciate the advice!

yyeah..I wish I was rich...
You should hear this thing..sounds like a fire truck siren in 1st & second & I drive 65 miles a day through Boston. Not to mention my release or pilot bearing sounds like a newly wed couple on a spring bed. Who ever owned this truck before me, really neglected to service it. If you had this set up, you'd replace it too.  :driving:

SWAMPER

Oh defenetly...but I would have proly waited till the danr tranny fell off and I would have to push it like 5 miles
