That is impressive.  But not totally surprised by the vehicle.  Those TBI 350's are pretty solid.  A little low on power but solid.  Even if it needed a few things over the years like a starter or water pump that is pretty darn good.  A water pump is probably a wear item when you have that many miles.

I doubt the newer engines will do that with all the piston slap issues they have.

Kinda hijacking the thread. but...

Lots of the LS series motors have that problem.  Heard it on several LS1's and a bunch of trucks with 4.8/5.3/6.0  and there is a good reason.  www.pistonslap.com

I like the trucks otherwise.  I didn't buy one because of the piston slap issue.  That and the weak driveline they keep using in the 1500.

True.  I don't know why they go so weak, it has to cause warranty issues that cost them piles of cash.

Seems like chevy (maybe it was just local, cause I know it was a local rancher) was running a commercial several years ago with a local rancher who had over 1,000,000 miles on his 70ish cheby truck :dunno:

It's a shame too because guys are getting serious power out of the Chevys with simple mods.  There are some really quick trucks out there but I've seen too many blown 4L60's and it scares me away.  And not to mention the piston slap problems which is stupid.  And the guys running LS2 in GTO's and Vettes are getting sick power with little work.

I personally think the GM LS motors are a superior design to the Toyota 5.7.  I'm a bottom line kinda guy and as far as I'm concearned it doesn't take 4 valves, 4 cams and 3 timing chains to make 380hp outta 5.7 liters with only 15-18mpg.  .  Yeah, its cool and all and I like Toyotas but that does not impress me.  GM can exceed that with pushrods and 2 valves per cyl all the while getting better MPG and there is enough room in the Chevy to tune it out much further.

i know what you mean on the 4l60e's, they're being phased out though thankfully.

very possible nate, the 350's were damn near impossible to kill. able to get really good fuel economy and EASY to get power from them.

I've got a 96 with the 5.7 and 4l60e and tow with it. Does great. just turned 160,000 a few weeks ago. I've been wanting to trade it in but it's been a damn good truck.

You are lucky.  Go on a Chevy board and do searches on 4L60's and see what you come up with.  www.fullsizechevy.com, www.gmfullsize.com. Many guys that do any serious towing swap in the 4L80 which is stronger but robs power and mpg.  And at a minimum they try to "help out" the 4L60 with tranny coolers shift kits and servos.  I used to own a 98 Tahoe, so I'm speaking from experience as well.  Almost everyone I know, and I mean everyone has had tranny issues with the 4L60 in their fullsize trucks.  Some at 30,000 miles.

Same tranny used in a 3000# vehicle as a 6000# vehicle about says it all.   :dunno:

Lets not forget the puny 8.5" diff, same situation.

BTW, have you changed your intake manifold gaskets yet?  If not you should.

30k miles problems with the 4l60e? must have been towing over 5k pounds with the tranny still in overdrive. gm should have put the 4l80e in the 1/2 tons as well instead of just the 3/4-1 ton. the 10 bolt rear (8.5") will hold up fine behind a 350 and smaller tires, 33"-smaller. with 160k miles would be a good idea to go ahead and get new axle bearings, axle shaft seals, and inspect the carrier.

Many, many years ago there was a TV news spot on a VW Bug in Pasadena that reached the 1,000,000 mile mark. Though I must say that is incredible mileage out of a Chevy. :gap:

Gaskets were done 4 years ago, right after I bought it. The tranny is still doing good. I don't trust it for much longer though.   The 10 bolt does suck ass. I'm waiting for the posi to blow any day now. I need to get an Auburn or atleast a new open diff in it.

Besides a dist, fuel pump, and radiator, it's been good to me.

HAHA.  I forgot about the fuel pump.  Mine went bad too.  It had close to a full tank when it went.  Tahoe had a 30 gallon tank, that sucked dropping the tank with all that fuel in it.  That was a pricey fuel pump.  I did it myself and it still cost $400 if I remember right.  That was a GM part from the dealer.

Every now and again I hearn a GM truck or SUV drive by with that characteristic fuel pump whine.

I also replaced the fuel pump, intake gaskets, front pinion seal, water pump, alternator, I was wheelin it pretty hard for what it was (6000# bus) and I broke a motor mount and kept getting exhaust leaks at the manifolds.  V8 torque and low range don't mix with stock motor mounts.  Despite all that I liked the thing.  Best looking truck I've ever had. But after all that by 90k then I traded it in.  Trans was slipping when I sold it.

And it had that GM driveline slop issue that they never fixed.

NOPE.  Bone stock commuter Suburban 2wd.  It blew the 2nd tranny soon after and warranty was expired on it so the dealer replaced it for him for cost of labor only.  He sold truck it with I think 60 to 70k and it was on its 3rd tranny.

Also, my best friends inlaws have an 03 Tahoe 2wd on its second tranny.  It was replaced under warranty I know that for sure.  So that was less than 36k.

I did my fuel pump for about 60. Just got a pump. Didn't wanna spend the extra for other crap other than the new filter/screen.  I also run synthedic in the motor. Been doing that for about 3 years now.

See, there you go!  My first gen has over 500k mi, just not on the original engine, though I haven't seen any signs of the L43 being gone through.  Also, when I popped out the front wheel bearings I found them to be koyo, and I have to wonder how many people will actually go out of their way to get oem bearings and pay the extra cash?

My dad's 90 suburban has (last time i checked) 292,000 on the origional engine/tranny/tcase. The only thing besides regular maintenance that needed replacing was the rear differential and a radiator. I blew the rear out when I was 16 doing a burnout  :hammerhead: The AC also went out but we never replaced it.

Otherwise it has run like a champ. Pops bought it in 90 with like 5,000 miles on it. Looks like we've got a ways to go for the million mile mark but I think the old girl has it in her :D
