Which brand R&P? Confused by reboxing
« on: Feb 08, 2008, 02:07:00 PM »
I'm getting 4.56 gears installed and my installer left it up to me to pick the R&P brand for my eLocker diff.  I also want to have my gears and bearings Cryoed for piece of mind.  It doesn't cost much extra and he said he'd be able to do that with anything I choose.

What I'm confused about is the "reboxing" thing that seems to happen with gear companies.

It is my understanding that if I buy a Yukon R&P set it could have anything in it.  Same goes for other brands.

I am uncomfortable with uncertainty.  And want to be sure I'm getting good stuff.  Seems like everyone is happy with Yukons but I don't understand that if buying Yukon means you get Richmond or whatever.  Why not just buy Richmonds, or Precisions if that is what you are getting anyway?  :headscratch:

I've never heard of this reboxing deal... can you explain or post a link?
Either way if you get yukons you got THEIR warrenty and THEIR name on the the box which if it is another brand of gears that aren't quality then it hurts yukons name.

On Zuk's website you can see that some of his Yukon installs had a different brand in the box.

www.gearinstalls.com

I did a search on Pirate and found this thread. linky when I used search terms Yukon and Quality

Just because it has a lifetime warr. does not mean I want to use the warrenty..  I agree with your concern.

And as far as the warranty goes, what happens when you try and claim warranty and they tell you T.S. because your gears are made by Richmond.  How do you prove that you have Yukons if it doesn't say Yukon on it?  According to the Yukon Website, warranty is only 1 years anyway.

If your having the r&p cryoed the warrenty will be null and void regardless of whos name is on the box. The cryo process changes the metalurgy, or whatever ya call it, it makes the gears more pliable, and less likely to shear, shatter, or crack.
I have broken the ring gear teeth off of 2 yukon r&p sets. I went with a reboxed cryo replacement in the rear. I'm shure I will find out how strong they are eventually.

Yeah, I not too concerned about the warranty.  A one year warranty isn't much anyway.  I just want something that will last.

I was thinking of going with Precision Gear now after doing more web searching but am open to suggestion.

My sugestion is to get a r&p that sets up good, which covers just about every brand name gearset out there.  As far a strenght between brand, it won't matter with the cryo. I would be more conscerned with Quality bearings, and a solid spacer, to replace the crush sleve. :twocents:

OK.  Thanks for the input.  Probably be Precision then.  Price is about the same and people seem to have a high opinion of them.

But it seems if I buy precision it could be a US Gear or Motive in the box as well

Found this thread on this board from last year.

thread

Just to be clear, Yukon does not make gears. They are simply sets of Richmond, Precision, or US Gear gears (there may be others in there too) in a Yukon box. I would not put the Richmond gears in the same class as Precision and USGear, so there is no way I would say Yukon is the best.

As for what to buy, spend the money on a great setup - that will make more difference than what brand the gears are.

Ummm .. it's common knowledge, and not "hidden" in any way. Open a box of Yukon gears and see what's actually stamped in the side of the gear.

Call PORC and talk to Alex about the guy who bought Yukon gears and returned them because the gears said "Richmond" and how they had to open every box until they found some Precision Gear ones.

how do you know what gears you got?  I just purchased some Yukon gears and they don't say Yukon on them they just have a circle with a K in the middle?

I  have spoken personally with a representative of Precision Gears on this issue....

He informed that it is "common practice" (meaning all manufacturers do it) in the gear industry to re-box gears and would not confirm that the gears in a Precision Gear box are actually Precision Gear brand.....

Somewhat disheartening and confusing, I know.

I've done a number of gears that had the K with the circle.....the most recent one notably came in a white box that said "Made in Korea" and it did set up beautiful also so I can't say anything bad about this Korean plant  :)

Huhwhye---- How are the gears doing?

But as you may have noticed I made another post.  My front end is very noisy.

I've had some bad luck with the buildup.

I know you had some other company set up your front clamshell 3rd....I'm sending you some paint and a mini brush tomorrow. It's kind of a PITA to paint a pattern through the fill hole but it can be done.
