95 4wd cummins compared to..........
« on: Jan 29, 2008, 07:23:18 PM »
like the title says, compared to what you guys tow with. i tow with an 02 5.4l expedition. it tows nice (could use bags) but runs out of power on ice house/loon lake road.

now i know the cummins will flat out, out tow the EX, but that is not what i'm looking for. i have friends towing with, 99 7.3 ps, 95 7.3 ps, 01 v10 ford, yada yada...............

what i want to know is what a 95 cummins w/auto 4wd will tow like. normally it will be one tube toy on a 18' light weight race car hauler, and on occasion a two car hauler with my 3000lb toy and a full body rig. will i be comperable?

also is $4000 worth it for a 95 cummins 2500 4wd club cab that runs good?

when i lived in cali, i had a powerstroke with a 7.3 and an auto trans, it was 4x4. i BARELY could get to the top of icehouse, the trailer was heavy and the  rig weight at least 5k

so i borrowed my freinds 96 cummins with a 6spd, pulled the hill in 4th and 5th with no issues, a million times an improvement.
i sold the powerstroke that week.

4k for a good 4x4 cummins is a steal in my book

Then there was something wrong with your powerstoke.  I have a 32' motorhome with a V-10 and have no problem towing my rig on a trailer up icehouse.  Plus I have many other friends with 7.3's and 6.0's that don't have any problems.

$4000 is a good price for a 95 cummins (and its cummins, not cumminGs), that auto tranny will be the killer though. pick up an nv4500 manual tranny for it and you'll be set.

$4000 for a 2wd with the cummins is a good deal, for a 4by that's a great deal!

test drive it first and make sure it has the power you want, i have known some people with the mid 90 cummins that didn't have that much power.

I used to tow with a 95 2wd cummins and i loved it but the only main prob is the auto tranny if you get it give goerend a call and let him hook you up with a torque converter and valve body and you will love the tranny. I say go for it that is a killer deal just make sure you test drive it and find out if any thing has been done aftermarket wise and ask about the kdp (killer dowel pin).

wow, forgot to look back at this one. the cummins has no mods, i will test drive it before i buy it. the owner is in no hurry to sell it, and will wait for me to have cash in hand :gap: just waiting on the uncle sam check to show up. he even told me i could hook up my trailor and test it out :yesnod:

what is the killer dowl pin? i guess i need to do some research on this.

thanks,  mike

I routinely tow 15K- 20K lbs. with either a 7.3 or 6.0 PSD or a mid '90's mechanical 5.9 Cummins.  Occasionally, I'll be dragging 30K.  Anyway, from my personal experience with these vehicles in stock form, the Cummins wins hands down.  When loaded, the PSDs are slower out of the hole and have more sluggish response and seem to just be working harder, while the Cummins isn't affected a whole lot.   Unloaded, the PSDs will prison rape the Cummins, but since you're looking for something that tows, and aren't looking for a race car, my recommendation would be the Cummins.  Hell, I'd even take a non- intercooled Cummins over a PSD or Duramax any day; they're industrial engines and will go 300K + if you treat them properly.

*edit- oh crap, I didn't see the dates on the posts.  Sorry for bringing it back from the dead.  :)
