leaky rear pinion
« on: Jan 29, 2008, 02:54:23 AM »
well i bought a 81 toyota SR5 last weekend.  drove 1120 miles in 21 hrs. to pick it up.l

i have put in a new carb, radiator, and other small things. i have plans to redo the lift to something made in this century.  it has a 7-8 lift.  looks like a kit. not sure.  if it is it was like the first lift kit every made.  but the pinion angles and everything are straight.    the biggest problem is the rear leaky pinion.  if you grab the dshaft.  you can shake it.   i am pretty sure it needs a new bearing, seal, etc.   does that rear kit include everything.  or is there anything i should buy.  and i cant do this by myself because the bearings need pressed on right?   thanks for your help.  i am very excited about this truck.  first 4x4!!!!!

I would keep the tires if you are already geared for them.........they look bigger in the pic for some reason..I think its the astronomical lift..

I would just put some 4 inch springs on and call it good

You can replace the pinion seal by unbolting the driveshaft, and then the pinion flange . Use a seal puller or something to pry the old seal out, then replace with a new one and reassemble.

I do belive there is more to it than that though. How long have the gears/bearings been installed in the vehicle? It is likely, if everything moves around like you say, that the pinion bearings are shot, or the pinion nut has backed off.

Take the driveshaft off and check to see if the pinion nut is staked into the small notch in the pinion. If The flange is held tightly to the pinion move the flange/pinion front to back. If it moves excessively then you are in need of a rebuild, and possibly new r&p gears.

As DTB said nice rig, keep the 36s. 5.29 should be enough gear for them.

Welcome to  :turtle2: from Ontario, Canada.
Nice looking truck, as Glen indicated you can service your 'leaky rear pinion' yourself, Id recommend a complete service kit including bearings and while your in there check your axle shaft seals  :yesnod:

thanks for the help.  i have fixed the issue  and finally had a chance to take the truck for a ride.  scarey to say the least.

I need some suspension help!!!!

the rear of my truck has stock springs and 8" blocks, bent traction bars.  bent U bolts.  the whole back of the truck sways when i shift.  i have to park it.

are there any leaf springs that will give me a 4" lift all the way around and bolt into the factory locations.

i am going to buy hysteer but need a cheaper route for the springs for now.  previous owner did the j arm flip but i can see a crack between the mounting bolts.

i see people talking about wagoneer springs?

There are but most of them ride like a brick (i.e. superlift, pro comp, those type of lifts) I'm sure they would ride better than what u got though :yikes:

In order to get better flex you really need to use longer than stock springs

I have compete set (front and rear) of springs for a 7" lift from national spring.  I have had them for along time but they are new.  They will bolt to the stock locations.  pm me if you are interested.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

yep.  i was just out in the woods earlier tonite.  i am definitely keeping the tires. yeah the lift is gone. i am going to start painting the frame(POR-15) next week.

do you think i can fit the the 36's with just a 3-4 inch lift?  dont mind trimming.
