Blown R&P...trash
« on: Jan 13, 2008, 08:40:43 PM »
Totally blown...my guess is the bearing gave out and the pinion walked all the way in and ground up on the carrier and blown the ring gear teeth.  These are yukon 5.29's and these were all new bearings throughout...the lockright looks fine, gotta get this fixed before March 15th...Moab!!!

Is the pinion loose? If not, my money is on the bearing on the carrier, opposite the ring gear, being loose.   If that bearing fails it should cause the carrier to move towards the pinon as the gears load and want to seperate which could make the carrier contact the end of the pinion. But that's just a guess... :cheese:

That looks familiar. Here is my 5.29 yukons I broke, yea it was my fault. The bearings were fine, I do belive there was some deflection that could have been prevented had I used a solid spacer insead of the stupid crush sleeve. I replaced this 4cyl 3rd with a v6 3rd, 5.29s cryo treated, and of course solid spacer. Now I have to replace the front, but its not getting cryo, and is staying 4cyl. I am also setting up a spare 3rd just incase my foot goes through any more growth spurts.

Did you have a crush sleeve or solid spacer? It would be a good time to give the other diff a once over just to make shure everything is up to par for your moab trip.

Yep, solid spacers front and rear, and I was trying to crawl a ledge...sounded like a really loud birf had blown and then the front end started ratcheting

i would vote 90%  crush sleeve  or  10%  pinion nut stripped

He had solid spacer, so I vote bearings. I have never seen a stripped pinion nut. Not  that that isn't possible.
