Shaving your diff?

Alright I have been doin some reading and it looks like I can gain about 2in of clearance under the rear diff of my 14 bolt by shaving it.

I have no clue about the front ten bolt how much I can gain by shaving....

It wont be fun cause I have to pre-heat so I get a good bond with the cast diff....


What do you yota guys get for your trouble?
Im sure  its a bit easier cause you have  a stamped diff dont you?

Can only gain about 3/4 of an inch or so, nothing more.  its helps though. (on a toyota)  Front 10 bolts are pretty small to begin with.

On a 14b, it depends how extreme you want to get.  I've seen guys on pirate shaving the ring gear down to the same size as the carrier, and cutting the crap outta the housing.

I don't know...I tried looking around after I posted that, but I couldn't find the thread.

I guess as long as you broke it in carefully, it would be ok...I wouldn't trust it though.

I got about 1 inch on my rear, not sure yet how much on the front until I get it done.

Ok new question how do you tell cast from nodular cast? 
Guy on whiteknight says I can weld on my rear but not the ten bolt front?  But I welded to it once and it seemed to have good weld characteristics but it wasnt structuaral so it never got tested, he says if I shave it that it will leak, and not hold....   I dont know he really wasnt helpfull, just kinda a richard.

LOL pirate is like that, and thats why I dont post on there but this was actually on whiteknight, most of the guys there are cool though.
