Sliders with or without kickout?
« on: Jan 09, 2008, 09:02:03 PM »
I'm planning on buying sliders and I'm trying to decide which style to get.

Do I want a kickout or not?

This is for my 2000 4runner so its a little heavier than a regular mini.  I also have the stock fender flares.

Thanks

Understood.  I am leaning that way.

Maybe a little more info from me would help

This rig is new to me and many mods are being planned and parts are on order.  Basically this is going to be a DD that's a weekend family wheelin/expedition rig.

The Basics:
I'm keeping the IFS and getting a 2-3" coil lift and running 32's (maybe 33's at the biggest).  Dual locked, 4.56's.  Sliders, ARB front bumper.  Better skid plate, rear bumper with tire carrier down the road when the funds permit.

It won't be doing anything extremely hardcore.  I do think setup the way I want it will handle most trails, even very difficult.  My experience is less than average on this site but above average for most.  Been wheelin my 87 since '94, lockers were my first mods.  I just want something functional and want advice from those that have experience with sliders since I have none.  My 87 has the rock rash to show for it.  I've seen sliders done a few ways.  Kickout in the rear, kickout on both sides, no kickouts, in close to the body and really wide.  Any advice is appreciated.

thanks.........

looks or function......   I think the non-kickout looks better.

Also might depend on if your wheels stick out.

my only beef with the kickouts is the potential for hang ups on them...

The extra protection would be nice though

I have the kickouts on my DD/trail rig and other then having extra protectionwith them they have worked good for setting heavy items on so I could unlock/lock and open/close the door. Never had a problem with them hanging up on anything.

+1 for kickouts.  Plus, they make nice step ladders to get stuff off of your roof rack if you have one.  Or to just easier wash your truck.

Wouldn't kickouts be more likely to hangup on something if you've got to go in reverse?

I dont see it, the idea of the kicker is to kick you out so you can slide out more on your tires and dont hit it blunt on.  So in reversi it should work the opposite and give you something to land on when something slides past your tire...

Its possible I guess, but not very likely.  the kickouts are rounded, so whatever you hit would have a tendency to slide along the curve, instead of hooking on one spot

I think he is thinking about this type of kickout....which is the same concern that I have..

Look at the angle of the slider on the kickout going front to back..looks good....now back to front....looks to me like it could stop you

possably but I thought that kicker was pretty close to the rear tire so getting sliding on it should be a non issue, but if it only goes down a portion of the side I suppose it could be an issue...  But the closer the kicker is to the rear tire the less of an issue it is...

The 4runner body is longer andthe kickouts would have saved my door and rear side panel .

You could also go with the bars with that step up ath the end and cover 6 or 8 in of the body....  those look good and protect also...

I use sliders with kickouts, and am glad I have them. I use the forward part of the kickout to pivot around obsticals. I use one larde diameter bend instead of the multiple smaller bends, when I build them. Doing it this way creates a more rounded surface for sliding onto and off of protrusions on the trail.
Heres a set I built on my buddies 4runner.

I have had one particular incodent where Iwas hung on the kickouts simutaniously, and had to winch becouse of it. If I had it to do over again I would still go with the kickouts.

Thanks for the advice so far.  I've decided I'm going to get kick outs.  Now I just have to pick which ones I like.  So many people make them.
