Breaking in front gears?
« on: Jan 08, 2008, 04:10:39 AM »
New 5.29s.  What's the prefered method other than drving around a dirt lot in 4-Hi?

Also, when I sas'd my truck I relocated the rear spring perches so the diff points toward the tranny.  This also pointed my fill hole towards the ground more.  When I filled the diff I could only get 2qts in.  Thinking I need to lift the rear up quite a bit to get the last 1/2qt in.  What have you guys done, makes sense to me .

You can drive around in 4H with hubs unlocked, This will break in the drive side, than you can  drive in 2wd with hub's locked to get the coast side. As far a the rear goes just remove the axle vent and add the rest of the gear oil through the vent hole.

Sometimes I wonder how I even get to work  :shake:.  Good tip, thanks.
I did think about the ditch in my front yard  :gap:.  It would have to be a pretty steep incline to get that hole up.

I'd be careful driving around town with the hubs locked even in 2wd, the front tends to get hotter than the rear and will start spitting gear oil out the vent tube which means it's getting a little too hot.

Does it need to have a load on it for a true break in? I was also told that when you change the angle of the axle to align the drive line it can cause a vibration.  :dunno:

Do you know of another way? What if i did one hub engaged two wheel drive. Thought being it might lessen the movement/ bindage?

So how about a nice long dirt road? Or am over thinking this and i just need to take it easy with the truck for a bit?

when i broke mine in i just did some easy trails in 4wd for a couple weekends. Helps get it through the heat cycles and actually put a load on it. Its gonna take forever for the front end to get broke in cause when u wheel your probably not wheelin more than a 100 miles in a weekend unless your somewhere in 4hi cruisin all day.
to fill the rear just get a hose that fits the fill hole good, put a funnel on it. Then dump the extra oil in it. Once u think its all in there pull the hose and cap it reall quick.

Taking the birfs out is not a problem because its an ifs rig. i can just not put my half shafts on for a bit a go 4hi everywhere, although someone mentioned this will not get the coast side of the gear.

bought new gears on thur for my ifs and a new axle yesterday for down the road. So maybe i have a bit of trial and error affordable.

This is how my gear guy told me to break mine in. He goes by Gearman on PBB and is one of the best in the USA.

Me-How do I break these gears in?

Gearman-Where are you going?

Me-Con (Rubicon).

Gearman- By the time you get to the Box (Little Sluice) they will be broken in, then he smiled!!!!!

Well that is what I did about five years ago and they are still going strong.
