3RZ swap--AC and W59 questions
« on: Jan 07, 2008, 05:52:11 PM »
Posted this on Pirate...Hopefully this gets more traffic here...

I would like to retain the factory 86 4Runner AC when swapping to the 3RZ engine within the next few months. Post up if you've done the swap and have AC whether it's with the old R12 system or the newer R134 tacoma system. I will use the older system because it still works and is intact. I don't want to tear it up. The AC system in the totaled Tacoma I bought is gone-the only thing intact is the compressor.

I read a bit on the MarlinCrawler board but the sight has been down since last night. I believe someone got the older compressor to work but had to use the clutch/pully from a Toyota MR2.

Also what about the transmissions? It's a bit more work involve, but can I use the W59 tranny internals and the W56 tailhousing so I can retain the dual gear driven cases? The reason for using the W59 tranny is that it's newer, shifts smoother and has half the miles as my W56.

I know this is a super-old thread, but I am coming to the same issue and can't find an answer anywhere.  I am swapping a 3rz into a 1986 truck that has AC, but it doesn't work even though it is complete.  No idea why as I haven't tried to troubleshoot it.  Has anyone swapped a 3rz and kept AC?  R12 or R134?  What compressor setup did you use and did you swap the pulley?
