Tundra Axle
« on: Jan 04, 2008, 06:42:54 PM »
Does anybody know the specs on the new Tundra's silly big rear axle. I freaked out when I saw one because the thing looks like a 9'' Ford. The 8'' rear is about as strong as a 44, but this new axle looks sexy. I am putting on my list as a potential swap if I can get a hold of one...one with the Elocker   :beerchug:
I've got the most liftedest truck in town, that little jap truck done stand no chance gainst my Chevy. My Chevy gots a V8 more lift an bigger tires, and an exhaust system, whats yer tuna can got, a V4, and them tires look like they is offa Saturn Corulla. The dealer instulled my lift, so ya no its done right, you just try to foller me throo them rocks an see what a reel truck can do.

10.5" ring gear!  :yikes:

Indeed, 36 spline axles, with an outside diameter of 1.457 nches comparable in strength to 14 bolt or Dana 70, so says the august edition of 4wheel and off road.
22RE .30 over, mild cam, K&N, LCE header, 2.25'' pipe, high flow cat, Magnaflow.
 Marlin 1200LB clutch

 no substitute for 4wheel drive.

I read that too I think that they must have been comparing ring and pinion cause the 14b has a 1.5in shaft and is something like a 20% differance in strength according to pbb.  Anyways not the point just something that seems to be odd to state cause shaft comparision would put it closer to a 30spline d60 rear.

I wonder what the advantages are to running the 5 lug on this axle? Most comparable axles run 8 lug, which I'm shure is overkill for the application.

5 would be a disadvantage, harder to get wheels in the aftermarket for one thing

They switched to a metric lug pattern but I don't know why they went to five.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

No real Lockers availible yet. We are working with Toyota to get a couple thirds to Brian @ Diamond so he can build one and possibly start producing them. We are also working to get a locker produced for them.

Axle shafts are really close to 35spline major diameter with a slightly larger Minor diameter. Ring gear is really close to the same  as the 14bolt and again similar size major and larger minor diameter. The whole thing weighs about 100 lbs less than a d60 rear. It will be a great axle but there is much work to do.

Eaton as well, to me it looks like proper machining on an existing locker blank but to the big guys it is a much bigger deal.

Cool,  may have to check one out.  Think I still want portals though.

Wonder how much you can shave?  I know if you try you can get 2in off the 14b.
