i have a dana 44 out of a dodge, the ring gear says 538 on it, but i want to be sure, i counted 46 teeth on the ring but without taking out the carrier cant see the pinion teeth, anyone know about these?

Put a mark on the ring gear, put a mark on the pinion flange. Turn the the pinion counting the revolutions it takes the ring gear to make one revolution. If it comes five and a little more then a quarter but not quite a half they are 5:38's. Also check all the way around on the ring gear, sometimes it is stamped on it.

i checked all the way around and saw #'s that didnt make sense and then bigger on the opposite side it said 538
