What is the difference between the W56A and the W56B

MiniSimp

W56-A Transmission

With the introduction of fuel injection in 1985 4WD trucks, Toyota also introduced it's new W-Series transmission. The W56-A was only used in 1985 EFI Toyota Pickups and 4Runners. W56-A models have an aluminum center plate and a single shifter (transmission) atop it's rear housing. This transmission is 25 3/8" long and weighs 85 lbs as pictured. The center of the trans shifter is 21" back from the front edge of the bell housing.

Years used: 1985

W56-B Transmission

The W56-B was used on 1986-1988 EFI Toyota Pickups and 1986-1989 EFI 4Runners. This model can be identified by having both a cast steel center section and a single shifter. This transmission is 25 3/8" long and weighs 85 lbs as pictured. The center of the trans shifter is 21" back from the front edge of the bell housing.

Years used: 1986 - 1989

Either way, they are both good. Have you thought about having Marlin rebuild yours?

The guy I got this truck from said he changed the transmission. Now that I am going with dual cases I pulled the t case and part of the trans came off with it. It was JB welded on. I want to strangle the guy I got the truck from. Now I guess I need to figure out what transmission to go with.

Duffil

oooh broken extension housing.  Check on the MC trans page to be sure of what is under there now.

Rubijon

From what I can tell There is a W56 I have not got it out of the truck yet I am going to start in about 30min. I dont know if it is an A or B

MiniSimp

Why don't you call Marlin and see if they have the part you need to fix it.

Rubijon

I have been trying to call Marlin and I get no answer. Did they change there #. I call the # off the web site and some lady answers the phone.

the w56a and w56b are interchangeable with no modifications, when i replaced the w56b that went bad in my 87 4runner (bearings) i used a w56a from a 1985 4runner, bolted right up with no problems or modifications.

Having a 12 second Honda is just like coming out of the closet; You're going to surprise a bunch of people, but in the end you're still gay.

It was not as bad as I thought. :dunno:

My favorite method that I have seen to remove it is the 2x6s and straps and lowering it.   But, yeah, it's not a terribly hard thing to take apart.
