It's time to build another hybrid rear axle and I need to widen things up a few inches and would like to do it without spacers.  Nothing wrong with spacers, I've been running them for years with no trouble, I just would like to build a bit wider if possible.

I understand that the Taco axle is about the same as the prior axles except wider.  I know it has the same 30 splines on the drive axles.

What I need to know is; Does the Taco rear axle use the same wheelbearings and flanges as prior years?

I believe that everything that is attached to the axle is larger. Bearings, seals, and brakes. Not sure about the brake cylinders. They are inner changeable, but not sure if the bore is the same on them. The bolt pattern/size on the flanges I think are the same though if that helps.

I have the longer axle on my TOY and a spare shorter one at my shop. I can see about checking these out for you this weekend while I'm there. Let me know.

Does this mean that the Taco drive axle assembly (wheel bearing, flange, brakes and all) would slide right into and bolt up to the same axle housing end flange that is on a '79 through '85 mini?

It would except for the axle being longer so it wouldn't go in far enough to be able to bolt it up.

Cool, the length doesn't matter since I build my own housing anyway.  I can set the width wherever I want it to match the width of the drive axle assemblies... 8)

Another question:  Does the newer runner have the same width axle with disc brakes?  I'm thinkin' rear disc brakes would be a good thing... :yesnod:
