Can you afford a spool? Under $200.

If not others here have done and they will surely chime in.

weld at every spot the spider gears contact each other. you could also add a piece of plate large enough to contact all 4 spider gears and weld it in as well.

weld all the spider gears together then weld them to the carrier. thats what i do

i also know people that put bolts and what not in there to bridge the spiders together.

Do these pictures help???  A couple shots of a welded 3rd I did.  I have welded about two dozen Toyota 3rd's with a 220V MIG, and never had any break, or experienced any problems with them.  Just make sure to clean the inside up real good, and dry it out....get some hot, penetrating welds on the spider gears, and let it fully cool.  And of course, always use at least a 220V machine.  110V really doesn't have the power to "bite" into the gears.  Just my  :twocents:

What amperage setting for the MIG?

How about stick with E7018? 3/32?

The gears are obviously heat treated/hardened, so just wondering how it would work out with a mild steel electrode.
22RE .30 over, mild cam, K&N, LCE header, 2.25'' pipe, high flow cat, Magnaflow.
 Marlin 1200LB clutch

 no substitute for 4wheel drive.

I would set your MIG on one of the higher settings, for anything in the 1/4" to 3/8" range.  Just be sure and have plenty of heat.  Turn your shielding gas up a little more than normal too, to help avoid too much spatter.  I usually stuff a damp red rag or shop towel in the axle inputs, just to avoid spatter getting in the splines.  I wouldn't recommend using any kind of stick/arc rod.  7018 3/32 is going to leave a lot of slag that is going to be hard to chip out.

Don't do what I did...

don't be afraid to turn up the welder, and please remember that Brakleen is flammable and doesn't evaporate super quick.  :attention:

just use a mild degreaser, or if you have access to a parts washer, that would be best....then let it dry overnight

i welded mine with a hobart 110 and i run 35's and wheel all the time with no problem at all.... i think its kinda pointless to spend the money on a spool when welding does the same thing... u can find 3rds in the yard for dirt cheap if u mess it up :twocents:

dont weld  to the carrier,  the spiders  are steel  the carrier is cast steel,  yes  it will weld  BUT   it  will make the  carrier crack

and  more of a chance to warb  the carrier  to

i used 110 for mine, i cleaned em up good before i did it then i soaked everything with anti spatter, then afterwards i scraped every pieced of slag off that i could find then pressure washed everything out and dried it up real good, it lasted me 2 years of heavy wheelin, and when i took it out, my carrier was so worn out that my bearings fell out....... i ended up buying a spool for $140 and have had it for 2 years with 40"s and its still tits! id go spool right away, and never have to wonder if you got all the crap out or not, i was always paranoid about my welded 3rd, but i sleep well at night with my spool, plus the spool is super easy, and super tough, definately worth the cash if you can afford it  :twocents:
