i had the same problem but it was a plug wire. i have used those bosch plugs before and they suck. the  prongs werent even firing. if i were u i would return them and buy your basic ngk v-power. they were cheap and work great. with the money saved u could buy a cap and rotor. if i were u i would als replace the plug wires as well.
Im an OG

I would also second the NGK's. I had problems with the Bosch plugs also & replaced them after 10k.

Here's the NGK Gold Palladium plugs featured on one of my super old webpages:

http://bigmike.marlincrawler.com/stage1/engine/ngk/index.html

They have a really small electrode that can only be beaten with Iridums - which is what im using now but expensive $$

Hey Mike...who is big...I went to that link you put on and it said you gap'd your plugs at 0.048 and got good results...could I do that too and have good results? :headscratch:

Hmmmmm............... I am not sure if your ignition system can handle a gap that large. Well, of course it can fire the plug, but that's alot of resistance and your coil is going to get really hot. My system actually uses two coils and I do not have a distributor so my spark energy is well conserved. Also I am running Nology hot core wires so that gives an extra kick to jump that gap..

Later on when I rebuilt that engine, I not only increased my compression with a 70% thinner head gasket, but I used a 20% larger supercharger that raised my boost from 13lbs to to 17.5 lbs. I switched to Iridium plugs and they would only fire at middle RPMs (5000+) and above if they were gapped to 0.022"

Now I have the same EFI system on a normally aspirated engine with about 10.8:1 compression with 4 individual 44mm throttle bodies. I bought some new Iridiums when I did the engine swap and I can run the gap anywhere up to about 0.050" But I found that anything above 0.038" on my setup gives a rough idle and slight hesitation diring quick throttle spikes. So Ive got them at about 0.035" right now and the power is smooth.

Stock gap on the plugs were 0.044" but thats for stock Toyota US market gaylord engines.

Man you can play with little things for the rest of your life and it may feel better from one day to the next, but what I am learning right now is that when you get into some hardcore changes in the engine nothing matters unless you ditch the stock ecu and go full stand alone. But this is on the very extreme side of the "i want more power, what should I do" topic.

I remember a post a long time ago that gave some great ideas.... Let me search.... hang on...

Ok, I found it. Please see this post: Cheap 4 Banger power tricks?

Its got a list of mods you could consider..

Read the list and let me know what you think...

Regards,
BigMike

hey mikey my 20r has the friggin water jackets running through the intake manafold where the carb mounts could i block that off like you would on the throttle body and would it hurt any thing??

BigMike

How does the choke on a carb work? Is it related to the temperature of the carb?

The cold idle would be the only concern..

Mike, I remember hearing the 22rte throttle body is larger than the stock 22re unit. Any truth to this & any experience with this mod if it is true?

The denso plugs are a factory replacement for your engine I think and the iridium is for the new cars. I think they would burn to hot for your car
