With non factory gears, are there fitment problems?

I am trying to find a set of factory gears but if I don't I will buy aftermarket.  Someone said in my other post that there might be a problem with aftermarket gears.  What exactly is the problem and how is it solved?

BTW.  As far as aftermarket gears go who makes the strongest?  How is "Genuine Gear"?

I think what was said in the other post was that if you get factory 4.88 fj80 3rd's then you cant put aftermarket gears on that carrier.  But that is the only one that is different that I know of.  All the other toyota carriers are the same basically and they dont require that you change them to put in aftermarket gears.  Precision gear has shown itself to be a very good gear company

don't go with genuine!  probably the worst ones out on the market.  i think the better ones are precision gear

and fj80s were never available with 4.88s.  it's 91 or 92-95 4runners and pickups with a v6, auto and stock 31" tires that got the wierd 4.88s.  supposedly they have the same carrier as a regular v6 third member, but can only be regeared with the same toyota factory 4.88 gears.

Anyone have any horror stories they could share with bad experiences with a certain gear company?

We use Yukon Gear which I believe are US Gears. Ive seen Motive, Precision, and Genuine gear sets....

I blew a set of 4.88 yukons up bad enough to put a dent in the rear housing of my 84   I stripped the pinion off of a set of gunuine 4.88's  Too much torque getting to the rearend!

I local rearend shop just told me that Richmond makes the strongest gears for Toyotas.  What do you think about that?

Richmond are great gears but I think he was being kind of Bias  and there a little pricey too

The only problem I have had with gears is the crush sleeve loosening up with 529's & the Detroit. Easy to solve, don't use the crush sleeve with a Detroit. I really believe correct set-up & break in are key to longevity no matter what the brand. I have used both Superior & Yukon.
