Welding on a new shifter?
« on: Dec 14, 2007, 06:10:47 PM »
I dont know if any of you have noticed but my shifter is super short. . well I cut it off because it was the wronge shape and kept hitting the dash... I was going to get a piece of pipe and bend it to the shape I wanted and then weld it to the stub, and then cross drill and weld plugs in.... Is there any issues here?

The other thing I was concidering was using solid stock and welding it on in place, and then welding a sleve to protect the joint....  I tend to thing the solid will be easier because I dont have to worry about kinking or flatening when I shape it...

If you use thick enough wall tubing you won't have to worry so much about it bending.  You could maybe use tubing that'll slip over the stock shifter shaft, drill several rosettes in the top and bottom, then weld the bottom to the existing shift shaft and slip the top few inches of the stock shaft into the top of the tubing and weld it in.  Shouldn't have any strength issues there, but I'm no metalurgist (sp) :dunno:

Had to cut and raise my to clear the body lift, and the other shifters for my duals.  I just cut it, cut some small dia. pipe in half longways, and welded the cut sections of the shifter into one half of the pipe the way I wanted it, then used the other half to cover it and welded that on as well.  Worked great, no problems at all
