It could be done.  I'd be much less worried about the wiring than the actual fitment.  All you should need for the wiring is either the schematic from the newer truck or you could make a pigtail from the early harness to a newer style plug.  Cake :gap:

Has anyone ever converted to HID's? I have the old round style 1980 ones would be nice to have the extra flame thrower like visibility

jimbo74

you can get sweet glass lenses from www.roundeyes.com, and then jsut get a h4 conversion kit.. the problem with HIDs is you usually lose highbeam capability

i am running the round lights on my truck... eventually i am going to get 4300k bulbs (just regular bulbs, and 4300k is closet to pure white, no bluish, bling bling colored tint) and an upgraded wiring harness from www.4crawler.com you would be surprised how much a difference quality glass, quality bulbs and a upgraded harness would do....

as for the original poster, what is the issue? are you trying to retrofit your new truck housing to old truck headlights? or? the 80s used a sealed beam headlight, but it also has the same wiring pattern as an h4

im trying to get new lights in my 86... my mom has an 01 runner and those lights are bright as :pokinit: and i would like to have my lights be that bright as well. so i was wondering what model they were

jimbo74

are you talkign about replacing bulbs? or? the stock system you have uses a sealed beam... upgrades are avaialble though... www.roundeyes.com and www.4crawler.com

talk to uncljpl4x4 he has the setup in his truck and he can attest to how much it kicks butt.... look up roundeyes on here, pretty lengthy thread on it

I just took a look at kragen...

Youre moms bulbs and my bulbs are the exact same. All they are is an H4 bulb like I have...

Just get the same thing I got off ebay and if its still not birhgt enough get some silverstar bulbs.. Those are bling. Theyre only like 40 bucks at kragen too.

I upgraded to the roundeyes kit (first mod after engine swap, rear axle, and tires), and I think it is awesome. It is a lot brighter than stock, and way brighter (although illegal, not DOT approved) bulbs are available. I would like to do the upgraded harness, maybe I can talk someone into getting it for me for Christmas.

I wanna get it too.. I havent done the test yet to see if its getting the same amount of volts as the battery but i can guarantee its not at least on mine.

I have a non dot approved (even though you can pick them up on ebay hella cheap) set and theyre pretty good. Theyre way more bright. I like em.

I spent 27 bucks after shipping and tax and theyre cool.

the wiring is the same, however you dont have a housing that will accomodate an h4 bulb. the stock 80s bulbs are sealed beams, they dont have removeable bulbs. to use an h4 bulb, you need new housings

lilbuddy, www.4crawler.com actually did a huge writeup on the upgraded harness, with voltage results, and he definately was not getting full voltage at the lights....

I know... thats why i was talking i havent tried to see if its the same as the battery. He said some lucky people are getting the same or close so that wouldnt be worth it. If mines the same or pretty close im not going to bother but if its way off im for sure getting that

You can build the harness for around $10.  I have a similar setup in my FJ40 with the roundeyes and the 110/90 bulbs and it works awesome.  Just buy a couble relays and wire them up

KDXSR5

Where do you find the 110/90 bulbs?

Hammerhead

I'm runnin' H4s and relays in my FJ40 also.  Awesome difference.  One of my wheelin' buds has relays on his Toy-mini and he also had a huge increase in headlight power.

I've powered my relays from the alternator and used the stock plugs to control them .  I got a 3 volt increase at the headlight...

Add to that a set of Baja (non DOT) 80/100w bulbs and WOW!  I got my bulbs at the local motorcycle shop.  They are popular with other offroaders as well.
