curious how these things do completly stock, is it worth it or do you have to upgrade a bunch of stuff.  i want one but dont want to put a lot of money into it because i would rather invest money into my real rig.

Well I just bought one, and quite honestly, they kind of suck right out of the box. They are set up as Rock Racers more than Crawlers, so you have to do a few things to make them more crawl ready. They come with an open front dif but also come with a front locker you can install. The stock 27 turn motor is way too fast, so I bought a 55 turn to replace it (about 30 bucks) and also put on a lower tranny gear. The springs are also way too stiff so I plan on finding a set of much softer springs to run but those are cheap. Other than that its just minor stuff, I need to trim the stock body a bit, and I need to remove a lot of the foam in the tires to make them "aired down". So really for an additional 40 or so bucks you can improve upon its stock form a lot. They arent terrible out of the box but compared to my friend who has done the same mods and more you can see the difference on the rocks. I got mine for $300 + the $30 55 Turn at Fast Hobbies down in Sacramento which seems to be one of the best deals on the ready to run kit. Overall I think its definitely worth it though, I have been having a blast with mine and am going to start the body work and install a front locker here probably tonight.

Here is mine, all stocked out at the moment. Only upgrade so far is a 55 Turn motor and lower tranny gear.

Plans so far:

Hack and paint stock body.
Different, softer coils
Install front locker
Remove a lot of foam from tires and paint rims

Thats the plan so far, the tranny gear and lower motor make a huge improvement over stock.

EDIT: I just got done getting rid of some of the foam in the tires and I painted my rims. I went to test the new "pressure" in the tires and it works so much better. Next step is to get that front locker in. Newer pics:

thanks for the info. i was thinking of getting one of the ARTR kits.  you have to buy the motor and servo, batteries and contoller, but it looks like i comes a little more set up for crawling. that way i could just get the motor and everything else that would make it a better crawler right off the bat.http://www.rcplanet.com/Unassembled_Rock_Crawler_s/1581.htm this seems like a pretty good deal if you have to change the motor anyways

Actually had the ARTR kit been available when I went to buy mine I probably would have done that instead. My friend just got the ARTR kit and he only ended spending $60 more than I did initially and his is pretty well set up. Its already got the nice steering arms and tie rods, bent rear links and alum straight front links and it comes with better tires than the Rock Lizards the RTR kit comes with. So he just bought the 55 T motor and the upgraded steering servo and stuff and ended up with a really nice rig. The ARTR is really the way to go if you want to get a more capable crawler right off the bat and skip having to upgrade the steering servo, steering arms and tie rods, motor etc.

I like it too but alot of people don't they say it's to top heavy but mine is super low I now have it all together and ran it about 2 times I have the saddle packs and about 6 oz of lead in each of the front tires and it works just fine I just have to get use to the full droop shocks there a little different then stock coil shocks.

I really want one of these! I already have a radio and servos would it be cheaper to build one, or get one of those rtr kits.  I found a kit that comes with everything except wheels, tires, radio and servos for 150 oh and it doesn't have a chassis, lol. Is it just better to get a kit with all the stuff minus radio and servos?

It is different. And from what I have researched it is stronger. Also, selectable lockers, threaded shocks, metal driveshafts, centered tranny, cool beadlocks.....

I would be curious to hear some impressions of the Venom Creeper and Team Losi's new crawler, both seem to be designed to be better out of the box than the AX10 BUT I have not heard a price on either, if its signifigantly more I would still stick with the AX10. Definitely curious to hear some opinions.
