Marlin Lift to soft for daily driver?
« on: Dec 06, 2007, 04:53:30 PM »
Hey guys I am new to the world of Marlin Crawler. I was wondering if I put a marlin 5 lift on my 85 pick up will it be to soft for me to drive daily? should I go with all pro? I am going to go wheelin with it so I don't want to buy a cheap lift with no flex.
Also if I go to 2 cases will that kill my mpg? Thanks for the help :headscratch:

Put some sway bars on. There is a trade off if you want to wheel it successfully. What is going to knock the MPG down is all the other stuff you need to wheel it. Big,wide tires and a lift. You will basically be pushing a big brick through the wind.

Soft springs equals reduced capacity.  Marlin and All Pro springs are essentially the same, I'm not sure there is a real advantage of one other the other.  You might consider a set of Alcans (www.alcanspring.com) for the rear for a better balance between flex and capacity.  Superlift and other standard lift kits maintain the stock capacity in most cases which is why they ride like 1 ton trucks, the added spring arch effectively increases the spring rate.

These springs are soft for crawling not sand blasting they will work but not as good as something designed for that a little soft for jumping dunes though people do it.  :shake_head::

I have Marlins 5" lift on my truck and I don't think  400 lbs is going to sag the truck that much.

You could relocate the rear shackle to reduce the shackle angle to increase the spring rate slightly if you wanted.

5" is too high for 35s. I have 4" springs with 36s and PLENTY of room.

I have a pic of my old truck with a ATV (kawasaki bayou 220 4x2...a little on the small side) in the back of it with All-pro 4 inch lift...Let me look for it.

Edit: found it!
Tires are 35x13.5-15 toyo's

Not sure why, but my old truck handled better on the highway than my 99 F-250.  Handling was pretty amazing with how tall it was, and without a sway bar.

Truck had dual cases with stage 1 stroker from LCE and got about 19.5 mpg at 65 mph with the extra weight of everything else (bumpers, sliders, stereo, arb lockers, etc...).  I have a project that I have to go into the mountains with and sometimes I had to leave the ATV in the bed while I hit the worn out dirt roads...never hit the body even with the ATV in the back.
