I just finished removing my rear propeller shaft....  deja vu.... I also dit that last month.

Ok.
I just broke my second 5.71 diff in a month.
the first one turned out that I broke the arb locker housing. resulting that thingy to get in the way of the pinion and breaking that.

Now I installed a well used diff that has an Detroit locker. I have been driving on that for 3 Weeks now. one major wheeling trip in witch I pulled this Nissan Patrol down to the city.

any how. I guess that I'm just pissed......

I had the 4.88 diffs picked out, for my next order from marlin. and since I busted my arb I guess I should get something like that to.

or should I just dump that idea and start thinking about landcruiser housings... 9,5" diffs  ????

I kinda like the good ole 4.10's. Everybody loves a classic.

but if you have big tires with no gears and daily drive, your truck will be gutless

Bazzi, maybe it's time you start looking for a dana 60 front and GM 14 bolt rear :eyebrow:

kinda curious about the rest of the drivetrain? i run 36's spool and 5.29,s for the last few years and had no problems....not tryin to be a di*k but do you beat the hell out of the thing? and who set up the gears...my friend runs 38" swampers w/5.29 and detroits, was a daily driver for 3 years and hard wheeler (30 min from the hammers) he never broke anything.

Motorvated

the lower you go (higher #) the more you will break them.  5:71s are known to break..atleast around here anyway

dizzydevil

i am aware of that but 2 in 1 month  :yikes:

Motorvated

yea..chances are they arent set up right, or possibly a bent housing?

I would "stick" your axle...im pretty sure thats the term used to check if its bent or not.  I had to have it done to my last rig..turns out, it was bent.

ok. driveline. I have a 2,4 liter diesel toy. with a turbo and an intercooler. I have duals with 2.28. I was running 5.71 with arb´s front and rear, and a full floating rear. (frontrange offroad)  and I am running a set of 39,5" trxxus

Of course I beat the hell out of that truck.... My usually wheeling trips are when other peoble stay home or someone broke something in theyr truck. last trip I towed a nissan patrol (heavy ass truck) took me over 16 hours to get that thing home.  so yes I use my truck.

But. last diff that broke was set up about 2 years from now. that one I broke the arb locker housing. I was so sure that it was the diff that I took the truck to a shop that set up the diff in the first time. When he told me that the arb was busted I brought him this diff, and told him that it has a detroid and he should check it out.
when I picked up the truck he told me that he just dropped the 3rd in there.
so bottom line the second diff was no  big surprice.
I was just a litle pissed cause if I have destroied that locker as well I have not a single locker left, and running something else than a 100% locker is just not working for me.
Probably the one thing that scares me is what about the broken arb housing. is that some one time fluke or ?
about the 4.88 or 4.10 I have a 350 chevy sitting in the garage waiting for a change to drop in there. also waiting is a set of 44" richard cepecs.....

to be honest I wanna stick with the 8" toy. for now cause my bank account wount stand all the axle swapping as well.

ide deffinatley check the axle for being bent or warped...dont know if you've had any welding done on the axle?  Guys around me run SB350s and 40s on these axles with no problem...but not 5:71 gears.

MiniSimp

Keep in mind, if 5.71's are not set up perfectly they will tend to break fast.

Willy Mammoth

4.88 or 5.29 Keep the backlash tight and make sure you have plenty of preload on the carrier bearings.

Also make sure they are V6, not 4 cyl housings.

I just got back from beating the crap out of mine with 4.88's and no problem yet.

2nd gear hole shots in some thick ass mud locked with my 3.0L TD and 38's.

Who made the 5.71's? Hope it wasn't Geniune Gear? They are the worst. I couldn't even tighten the ring gear bolts without stripping them.

Good luck,
Mark
