What axels are under a 71 IH 1/2 ton truck. Rear axel has factory detroit.

I'm pretty sure it's a closed knuckle dana 44 front and maybe a coarse spline dana 44 rear, but it's been a while since I've seen one.

Would the rear be worth using. What is course spline, and are parts easy to find.

A "coarse spline" is where they have like 16? splines on the axle shaft instead of 30 or so.

Course spline, like duff explained, is where there are far less splines on the axle shaft, which usually equates to a weaker axle.  Probably not worth using if you're going to beat on it, and definately not an upgrade to a toy axle  :nonono:

What trany/transfercase would this have. It is a granny 4 speed.

course spline doesnt always mean weaker, look at the sm465 for example its a 10 spline input shaft and its a rock solid tranny.

tranny could be an sm465 or possibly an sm420. few other possibilities but thats all thats coming to mind right now.

Here is a binder?scout forum. These guys should be able to answer all your questions. Oh and I think pre 75 scouts ha dana 30 drum brake fronts, and the really early ones may be closed knuckle as stated earlier.

When searching for a project I picked up a scout2 with a half cab. That thing was junk. I was able to trade parts and pices enough to come out on the right end of the deal, but I wouldn't bother again unless it was free. Scouts are verry prone to rust too!
