Hydro Assist fluid question - ATF vs PS Fluid
« on: Nov 09, 2007, 07:32:33 PM »
Stock Toyota power steering systems recommend using ATF. I currently am using ATF in my PS system. PSC recommends using power steering fluid in their hydro rams and pumps.

I am planning on installing my hydro assist system Saturday. I am going to use my stock PS pump and a PSC hydro ram.

The bad thing I've heard about switching is the Toyota PS boxes can leak after the fluid switch. Mine has a small leak out of the bottom anyways but I would like to minimize the box leaking.

This is something i have done, and if anyone thinks I have trashed something, let me know.

when I got my truck, the steering shaft at the rag joint was leaking a small amount, enough to keep the corner of the frame wet with ps fluid. By accident one night, I put maybe an ounce of brake fluid into the reservoir. Only after I cranked it and let it run, did I realize what it was. I figured it wouldn't hurt too much, since it was leaking out anyway. Turns out that the leak has totally stopped. The shaft seal, steering box, everything is dry. The only thing i can figure is that maybe the brake fluid made the seal swell enough to stop the leak.

If anyone else has heard of anything like this, chime in!

Also, I have heard that if you have bad valve seals, you can add a little atf to your engine oil, drive for 1-2 hundred miles and change the oil, and the seals will either leak less or stop leaking. (old used car trick)
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

I use Dextron(ATF) in my steering system with hydro assist. It works fine, no leakage problems with the ram. For the longest time I ran PS fluid just because that's what my trucks had in them when I got them, but once I have made the switch I would never go back...

i normally used ATF until my friends jeep burnt to the ground because of an ATF leak and some sparkage. the good thing about power steering fluid is it isnt flammable. but  ATF is.
