with all the new 9 inch craze going on...spider 9s and diamond 9s and such...im wondering what it would take (and would it really be worth it) to build a 9 inch front end with toyota balls on the end
ive got all the goodies you can get for a toy front end but im stripping ring and pinions...30 spline longs are amazing and i cant see why they wouldnt be a good axle to run in junction with a 9 inch center section...

heres my budget brain storm...full width 9 inch rear end from f150..shorted on one end to desired width toyota knuckle balls welded on the ends and custom inner shafts...i think it sounds like a good option for those that already have all the beefed toy front end junk but are now destroying R&Ps

i know of the spider9 and diamond housings..but non of them do a 9 inch center with toyota outers...im wondering about splines and fitting it all together..can a blank inner axle shaft be splined for a 9 inch on one end and for a birf on the other

EDIT

I'm an idiot.

Not a Ford nine inch but you might want to look at the larger cruiser diff.  The ring and pinion are substantially larger (over 9 1/2") and use the regular Toyota driveflanges, balls, knuckles, birfs or longs, etc.  I'm running an FJ60 front axle which is 58" wide compared to a mini which is 55".  An FJ60 also has the more desireable vented rotors for improved braking.  I also run a hybrid rear axle using a cruiser diff with mini outers for a matching 58" width.

How? The L/C uses a bigger ring gear.

duuh..woops...im thinking a 9 inch housing and third would be alot easier to find in my neck of the woods...and cost me less when all is said and done with the custom shafts...i would need a complete cruiser front end to run the third

i would check out spydertraxx and maybe go with building a 609 that way you can still use a drop out ford 3rd member

If I was going to do this I would build the 9" with 60 knuckles and Longfield 60 birf's.

The Toyota balls tend to bend and why keep that weak link if you are trying to build a stronger axle?

Woody and Dhondagod (ih8mud.com), among others, are also running these hybrid rears.  A front axle can be built by the same method but I don't see why when you can just use an FJ60/62.  If you want the narrow 55" width you could fab up your own...

If you are interested in building one for yourself just scope out these write-ups:

Maybe a bit offtopic but the new tundra axles are pretty beefy with a 1.45in shaft diameter and three ring sizes 10.5 9.75 and 9.5 if I remember correctly.....  Not totally sure but I was reading an article in fourwheel drive and there was a writup on the new tundra axles....  I believe the 10.5 comes with the 5.7L and the other two sizes come with the smaller motors...
Life is too short!!!   Do something with it!!!
