Calling Jimbo...Or anyone else that knows about explorers
« on: Nov 06, 2007, 12:34:55 PM »
Yes I am actually asking for your help  :shocking: :shocking: :shocking: :shocking:

Anyway i know you know way too much about rangers/xploders/bII and such... My buddy has a 93 explorer. His sister wrecked it and he wants to take it over to wheel it. Anyway instead of doing a TTB lift I said hey why not leaf spring it and throw a d30 under it. Same drop, close to same (if not same) width and itd be fine for doing light wheeling. I cant find much info on it (nor am i looking that hard) and figured you might know something. He found a procrap lift or something along those lines, a 5.5 inch one, for like 1025...just for the lift.

So, tell me if this would work. Leaf spring front, fatty drop hanger and shackles in the rear (most leaf spring swaps i see have shackles in the front which of course caused leaf spring failure, in all that i saw), d30 front end. for the rear i was thinking some F150 springs (the 3" wide ones) and some blocks to get it to the same as the front. For the front I was thinking maybe some leaf springs like what i have which are toyota rears with 3YJ springs in the pack so theyre pretty stiff. May need a 4th (making it 6 total leafs) with the weight of the 4.0.

If you have any better ideas let me know. I just htought an sas with the cost of the axle (stock) vs a ttb lift, the sas might be cheaper and better quality. now it wont be a dd and the only damage to it from wrecking it is a fender and hood.

Now keep in mind whatever hes going to do it needs to be 1025 or cheaper so if its not possible let me know. I figured d30s cant be much more then a hundred bucks.

oh what gears come stock? Will the stock 3.50 from the d30 work with the 8.8?
RIP Kyota.... you are the man

GET IT!!!

:dunno:  don't see why you couldn't.  You're right about the D30s, you could even prolly get them cheaper than that, due to the fact no one wants them.  PNP prolly would love to get rid of them.  :dunno:

for the rear lift you can do an SOA. the original spring orientation is the leafs under the axle, the soa nets about 4.5-5.5" then if more is needed, you can add longer shackles

there are some people that have done the d30 sas

let me see if i can find some build threads on them....

Oh yeah I totally forgot about that. a SOA would be fantastic.

Thatd be sweet if you find anything for me. Id appreciate it. I know youre laughing in your head but yeah, i said it, I appreciate your help.

Its not like he wants to rock crawl the SOB. maybe we will take it to the highlakes and snoweheelin and what not but if they can be good with an I6, 4.88s and 37s then it should be fine with a V6, 3.50s and 35s. Yeah the tranny will probably hate him (auto) but whatever. Like i said its no DD.

Do you think it can be done for under a grand?

the ttb is pretty capable as far as ifs lifts go, but they are quite expensive for a good kit. the sueprlifts have inherint problems with broken RA mounds... the best kit is a skyjacker class 2 6" for a ranger, but those are sadly no longer available

most people use the D44 from another vehicle instead of the d30 for strength, the explorer is a heavy vehicle, there are many that use the d30 though without problems

some of the threads above are for 95-01 explorers, mechanically, as far as an SAS is concerned, they are the same

also wanted to add, the trannies suck... haha... ford never had good trannies, ever, but there are a coupel things you can do to them to fix their issues and make them pretty reliable

the 91-94s mainly use auto locking hubs and a electric shift tcase, some did have manuals on both accounts though. when i had my 94, i swapped to the manual hubs, the autohubs may or may not work and are unpredictable, i never had a problem with my eshift tcase
