Anyone have any numbers on how much HP or Tourque the Toyota trans can handle? I know Downy had some nubers in an old cataloge for the G sieries, but I threw it away long ago.

No real need to know, just thought it would be interesting in case anyone was thinking of engine swaps. Or I decide to go with a Turbo on my 7MGE.

id like to know if there is any toy tranny that can hold up to constant flogging with a healthy v8 :hammer: :screwy: :headscratch:

Maybe somebody will pry some numbers out of Marlin and make a page for it. Doesn't that come up on the roadtrip trivia matchs? :driving:

The R series is Toyota's strongest manual trans, as far as I know.  The W and G series trannies were primarily used behind low power 4 cylinder applications, ome of the V6 trucks and the 2nd/3rd gen non turbo Supra.  I believe the R series was used in the 22RTE, some of the V6 pickups, and the 3rd gen Turbo Supra. The 4th gen Supras used a Getrag gearbox in the TT models, and I THINK a W series in the non turbo models.   I'm not sure which trans comes in the new V6 Tacomas, but I can find out if you need.

For what its worth, my R series in my Supra toasted its thrust washer (see other post) but not until it put down in excess of 300RWHP.  The torque doesn't seem to be as big of a concern, especially in a rockcrawling application, because the trans internals are moving slow.  I believe that my failure was due to a nasty clutch, and oil starvation at high rpm.

if you wanna go turbo you'll have to go with a R series tranny and a good enough clutch to go with it
1/2 85 toyota 4x4 + 1/2 turbo supra = ALL TOYOTA
