WIll 5.29's help me keep up speed on the freeway?
« on: May 20, 2004, 02:59:58 AM »
I feel like this is one of the stupider questions I have had, but here i go. I currently have 4.10's and 35". The only time I complain is when I come to a small hill on the freeway. THe truck slows down to about 60-65. Otherwise I can do aprox 80-85 on flat land (speedo is off, just know I can pass every car on the freeway, which is about 80-90 in my DD). WIll swaping to 5.29's help me keep up my speed on the freeway? What i really need though is a gear somewhere inbetween 3rd and 4th.  Does anyone happen to have a chart with the gear ratios in a w-56?

Thanks

:smack:  thats kinda like asking if  dropping a gear when passing on a twolane will help get around faster,  with 35's  you need  4.88's at the very least,  you will probably actually gain mileage, fuel consumption wise  :driving:

Going from 4.10's to 4.88's on my 4Runner made a noticable difference on the freeway with my 33's. You should see the same with 5.29's and 35's

Ok, good to know. Becaue the only time I wish I had different gears, is when I hit a hill.

Also, does anyone have the chart of the gear ratios in a w56?

And better gas milage I could go for. Although I already get in the 16-20 range with the 4.10's.

I'm currently getting 20mpg with a motor that has 220k on it, and we do have quite a few hills when I drive.  :beerchug:

I have a chart but not a scanner so I'll just list specs for the W56. 1st-3.93/ 2nd-2.33/ 3rd-1.45/ 4th-1.00/ 5th-.85/ Rev-4.74. Hope that helps.

i have 4.38s and get around 22mpg with 31" swampers and a 20R with 300,000 miles.  hopefully 4.88s, a 5 speed tranny, and an engine rebuild in the future will make it more enjoyable

I get around 17 with 33s, 4:88s, 83 with a 22r. when I changed out the 4:10s I had a big diff. going up hills towing my tralier! had to shift into 3rd before that. it has slowed me down abit thought. even with my 5spd.

I geass the anwser to your ? is your speed will be more steady, but maybe slower. hope that helps  :dunno:

5.29's, There is no better gear for the road and ther tail with 35's, but we all drive our rigs how we like.  Do you have a 4 banger or a v6?  That would be something to think about!  With a v6 it seems to be the way to go for me.

I have an LC eng. 22re. Quite peppy, even with 4.10's. And going from 31's to 35" I cant really tell a difference. But thern, I havent taken the 31's on the highway.

If you're used to cruising around 80 than 5.29s are too low. my 5.29's and 35s cruise at 60-65 at 3000 rpm. If you like to be able to go up hills, then 5.29s are good.

I dunno. After doing these gear calulations, I seem to see that my engine gets more oomph at around 3300 rpm. I notice that at 70, I am stuck in 3rd gear (4000 RPM), by 75, I need a split gear, (3000rpm/4500 RPM), and by 80 I can finally hold 4th gear (3250 RPM). 5.29's would put me at 3660, 3920, and 4200 RPMs in 4th gear, at 70,75, and 80 respectivally, and 3110, 3332, and 3554 RPM in 5th gear.  4.88's will put me at 3375, 3616, and 3858 in 4th gear, and 2969, 3074 and 3279 in 5th gear.  SO, it looks like I couldnt be able to cruse as i would like with 4.88's, and 5.29's would be alitle high with RPM's at 80.

And yes, I am used to crusing on the highway between 75-80.  I am happy that now after the new exhaust, I can. (whoever put a 2.25" header, to a 2" cat, to a 1.5" cat back on my 4runner should have been shot).

dont worry about hurting your 22 because of 3600 rpm,  they can handle alot more,  ive held 5000 rpm while passing trucks,  dont know how fast that is for sure but i passed everybody

I had 4:88's n my toy with 33's and with a v6 4.1 buick engine it was too much gear so I went to 4:56 gears and now run 35's I ran the 4:88's and 33's with the stock 4cyl and it seemed way too much gear for the tires but it was really peppy. but when I swapped in the v6 it made it like a race truck with low gears it wound out each gear so fast with the extra torque of the v6. I now am running the r150f tranny with the 4:56 gears and 35's and it seems to work real well for me.

I still have to get this all installed so I can't tell you how it will work just yet.

I will say with the 4:56 gears and the 4cyl it would probably be a dog but I drove it with 33's and 4:10's for years so when I got the 4:88's it seemed to wind out way to fast but it was just because I had gotten used to the 4:10's.

my engine let go soon after that and I swapped in the v6 and have regretted the gears every since. my v6 pushes well over 200 hp and would pull the 4:10's on the highway. but the 4cyl was a dog with the 4:10's and 33's

the 5:29's will put you back closer to stock gearing but to get exactly back to stock you would need something closer to the 4:88 or 4:56 with a 35 inch tire.

the wider tire and greater rolling distance and resistance will factor in as well as weight and wind resistance.

so go at least 4:88's and too make it a little more peppy go 5:29's

when I had the 4:88's and the 33's and the four cyl I didn't like it and wished I had went with the 4:56's

everyone likes the peppiness of the 5:29's but if you drive a lot of highway time like me you might like the 4:88's better
too much spent to go slow
too much spent to stay low
too much spent on the go
but it's fun you know

20 mpg with 235-75-15's and a loose timing chain on a tired 22R '84 xtra cab. I just changed the timing chain with an Engnbldr.com  kit and I think my gas mileage is better. I want to go to 33's and was thinking about 4.88 gears, but maybe 4.56 would be better for road driving.

I think you folks need to get your Speedo error figured out. Some of you are saying horibly low MPG. well oversized tires is going to make your odometer run slow. Your probably getting a lot better then you think.

If you have a tach you can figure out you actual speed using these calculators and the nice gearing charts posted above.
http://www.ring-pinion.com/calculators/calculatorsind.html

Knowing you gear ratio, current tire size, factory tire size the speedo was claibrated for and RPM's you can figure your speed and get a rough idea how off you are. I have done some playing with these and I thing they have figured in a little less tire hight to account for the fact most tires are not the size they say they are. If in doubt take off 1/2 an inch.
