agreed. what are the mods done to the 4runner? how bad are your current tires? can you not maintain highway speed? do you have a dual t-case setup? lockers? etc.

Tires....

Then Gears....

Then Bobby Longs...

Runner will look goofy looking like a scared cat, then youll probaby complain about the power so youll want gears, then when you break something youll complain about breaking so youll want gears.

Why 4.88s?

Oh, in the snow you wont need gears, single low is just fine so i wouldnt worry about that and also you wont really need axles because well, its the snow. Then again I did break one and so have a lot of other people but I am pretty sure mine were stressed/cracked from rubicon and that just broke them(that one was clicking for a long time) and then yeah youre going to need/want new tires over anything.

Why do you need gears? Better crawl ratio? Speed?

I have 4.10s in mine and it still does 80 on the freeway no problem

I ran the treated longs (which are provne to be WEAKER then stock), beat the piss out of them with a locked front and broke them both but once i put some stockers in there with the LOCKED front I still had no problems...

Im pretty sure he will be fine with new tires for now... Axles and gears can wait IMO.

I say do gears and axles at the same time (after tires) cause if youre doin the longs and some gears then youre going to have to pull it apart anyway to get the third out....

i agree with what lb said above about doing the gears and the axles at the same time. i would completely build the axle with longs and the 4.88s befroe you put it under the truck, that way it wont be a lot of extra work.

if the tires are stressing you out, jsut pick up a pair of cheapies from craigslist or somewhere....

red is right. Go for the sas, and do your axles and gears at the same time.
Its easier to work on the axles if they are placed on the work bench...

Yeah but its still not hard to do the axles and gears. Get 2 maybe 3 people on it and you could have it done in a couple hours. I know I will help him and im sure a couple other people will also, so he shouldnt have a problem with that.

I say tires first. Itll look goofy without them and like he said his are balding and whats the pint to have a capable rig if you cant even use it because your slipping all over the place? Im pretty sure he wants to be able to wheel it when its done and with nice good tires youre able to do so.

Tires and brakes always come first for me.  Especially with the cold weather coming.  It could be raining or snowing in most of the country in a few weeks.

Check summit racing and The Tire Rack in reno, they usually have the best tire prices you can find.
I went through the Tire rack on my BFG's and saved around $80 a tire compared to locally...

I would say invest in what your rig needs to run the bigger tires first, and keep an eye out on the forum and craigs list for a set of used tires that will work till you get the money,  Because if your rig cant handle the tires, or does a poor job of doing so, why put them on.

Eventually you'll need both tires and gears.  I'd probably get the tires before I'd get the gears (been there done that).  It may not be a pleasant drive with bigger tires and no gears, but it ain't impossible.  Heck, I was on 4:10's and 35's, 4:30's and 35's, 3:31's and 35's, 5:71's and 35's.  You're gonna feel the difference, and you may not like it, but I don't see what it'd hurt :dunno:

Downshift....

sometimes thats not even enough, depends on the terrain your driving on. back in west texas where its flat you could run, say, a 3.08 axle gear with 35" tires and a 4cyl and still maintain 70mph on the highway in 5th gear. up here in utah, alot of mountains i cant maintain 60mph in 4th gear with 4:10 gears and 31" tires. 3rd will do it, but i hate my rpm's being high (to me high rpm is anything over 2400, i've gotten so used to being around diesels.)
