79 build...project "endo"...New pics of cab swap!!!
« on: Sep 27, 2007, 09:28:59 PM »
This is going to be a long build since I usually don't have that much money around, but figured I would start to help motivate myself.  I bought this truck 4 years ago with a seized 20r...but the guy gave me another truck (2wd 84 I think) that had a good running 22r.  Swapped the motors and it runs great.

I started this build when I bought it adding: 4.7 t-case gears, power steering (push pull), welded rear, and trimmed the fenders to fit the 33's.  It was almost street legal (just needed blinkers) before I endoed.  One night with a bunch of buddies and beer (not good), I drove straight off a 10 ft. cliff and slammed on the front, and fell over on the top.  Had to use a highlift just to get back in and drive it to my buddies house.  Let it sit for a while and then let a buddy use it for hunting season (very bad call).  I got it back 7 months later trashed all to hell and a seat welded in the bed.  So, this is what it looks like today (got it back about 1 month ago).  I know it looks like  :pokinit: but I love this truck and will not get rid of it.

So, what is to come...in order:
New cab (don't want an f-toy...I would like to drive it around on the street and have heat)
Painting and fixing the rust on the new cab.
IFS front brakes and new drums in the rear with the 1" bore master cylinder
Seats (and get the heater working)
New tranny (this one is so bad it feels like you are in neutral when it is in gear)
dual t-case (already have a top shift ready to go)
Built 84-85 front axle (looking for a housing if anybody has one for cheap...I have an 83 but want the full gusset)
V6 rear third and high pinion up front (front with ARB rear with detroit possibly)
    IFS rear axle

I will leave the list to that for now because as you can tell it needs alot more than that...baby steps though, baby steps.

Any other ideas that ya'll think I could work with right now?  Has to be on the cheap side until I graduate (May 2008).  I already have the axle ball kit (truss) on order.

dont see much damage to the front. was it just the top of the cab that got crushed?

sounds like a fun project. good luck will attempt to follow.

Yeah...fell on the front (front clip is pushed back into the battery...but the headlights didn't break) and then onto the top.  We rolled it back on all 4's on the drivers side...all crumpling is on the drivers side and not really passenger.  Overall, the only real part that was damaged was the cab...but that has made my fenders crumple with it.

So, new cab hopefully soon...and I may start half doors if I get the heater working well.

My main goal is to have it pretty much close to finished (at least wheelable) by next years MCR...wherever it is going to be.

definitly have a new cab for it...will be picking it up mid October.  So for now I have started to work on the bed.  I took out a few dents, ripped the stupid seat out, and I am starting to take off some of the paint in order for a new coat (primer and all).  I am thinking blue (like the color of my jack handle in the first pic)...any suggestions?

I am also looking at different styles of seats...anybody have any that are comfortable and supportive (bucket)?

I like the color blue on your handle. I think it would look awesome! I have a set of celica buckets in my bronco that rock! You should pick up a set.

that blue should look good. are you gonna paint the whole truck solid blue, or just part of it with an accent color?

alright, so now it is a toss up but I will be getting started on the bed this week.

It will be either the blue or I am going to go with forest green and yellow (I think AaronB and someone else have a blue first gen...  :dunno: ).  So the truck will be forest green with possible yellow seats and yellow accents throughout (diff protectors will be yellow, cross over steering yellow, etc., but the wheels will still be black with yellow bead locks)  I am going to do the entire outside...inside bed and rails will be lined, and so will the inside of the new cab...and the 24" marlin sticker on the hood.

Plans for the next 2 weeks: pull off bed and strip all paint (including underneath to keep the rust away), prime, and paint with gloss spray can (can't afford a shop to paint it...and I will have to touch it up anyway from the rocks).  After all this is possibly done, I will be gutting all of the cab and getting ready to put on the new one.  Next purchase will be fenders, hood, and a new grill with headlight surround.

yeah, a crap load of work...but I don't want to let it go...runs way too good and it was my very first 4x4 I ever bought (paid 500 when it still looked good).  I had to eat ramen for about 2 weeks just to buy it...college = no $.

nah, having no cab is nice sometimes...but when it comes to driving on the road to go to another trail it sucks.  Plus I have to worry about getting a ticket (I do have windshield wipers though  ).  Plus I want to be able to wheel even if a cold front comes in...Tara (fiance') needs the heat to be comfy...sooooooooooo...out with the half completed roll bar and in with a new cab.  I'll chop the tube on it right now to make it fit inside the cab later.

Getting the new cab in 2 weeks...still trying to figure out if it will fit in the bed of my ford (8' bed).  I can't use a 4-wheeler at my study site anymore (hunting season) so this is my new ride for collecting data; took me all freakin' day to get it running right again.  So, until I finish my field data collection the only thing I will put up are goodies given to me by UPS  :dunno: .  I am gonna spend the night this friday so hopefully I will be able to get most of my data and I can work on this some more instead of driving it (and getting sunburnt  :smack: ).  Alsooooooooo, finally got a chance to go to my buddies house so now there is another t-case sitting in the bed of my truck...  :yesnod: RIGHT after I get back to town with the cab is when I am gonna start with a spray can.

Well, whatever he was hunting for, it looks like it found him...

Seriously, that thing looks like those trucks you find running around in Africa on Safaris.  Or something from the Outback.

If the shifter is sloppy, you most likely just need a new shifter seat or if it still has the L-43 trans, there is a set screw that probably just needs to be tightened where the shifter connects to the shift housing. That was the problem with mine, so I pulled the set screw, cleaned it and lock-tighted the :pokinit: out of it and tightend it as much as possible. Now it doesn't fell like it's in neutral when it's in gear.

yup, I think I found some hair in the front end and the truck smells like a dirty animal.  Looks like ol' sasquatch found it, tossed it down a cliff........uh......kicked it a few times......and then........

Yup, get a new cab and redo everything...getting the cab this weekend!!!   :woohoo:  and the dash should be here some time in the next 2 weeks!   I will add pics of the bed when I start working on it (also next 2 weeks or so)...and the break down of the old cab to get ready for the new one...now I just have to find fenders and a hood.
