Topic: rear drive shaft..CV or no CV?

i have 86 4runner with 63" chevy's springs  and i have both cv and non cv drive drive..from your experience  which one should i run ..what are the pro and con?  TIA

No clue, but I'm gonna hazard a guess until more qualified replies appear... 

I've never seen cv joints on rear driveshaft, only front.  Maybe they can't take as much torque as u-joints are capable of?  (In 4wd mode, torque is split between front & rear axles, so each gets half)

As to pro, cv can run at greater angles...

I in my 884runner i put the rear shaft in front an my cv shaft in the back but i made both shafts for long travel

You can go either way but you need to set it up properly.

For standard U-joint the tranny and pinion must be roughly parallel with the pinion nose pointed down 2° or so.

For CV type you want the pinion pointed up at driveline angle minus 2° or so.

The reason for the 2° below straight is because as you accelerate the pinion will "climb" the ring gear.

I run a retubed front shaft in the rear with my pumpkin rotated up for ground clearance...

I run a CV in the rear of my 4Runner.  I used the CV from a stock 85 front axle.

I run No CV rear.

I just put duals on my truck " Rocky " from MC set it up for me. In the process we had to lengthen the front drive line and shorten the rear. Rocky's suggestion was to use the CV from my front shaft on the rear and not put one up front so basically swap shafts and cut / lengthen to fit.  He explained why in great detail but a short version would be angles.  I set it up the way he reccomended at it works great

I have nothing for pros/cons, but for what it's worth I run a re-tubed, long slip front CV shaft in the rear and I haven't adjusted my pinion angle (yet) with no problems so far.

I was told by the Marlin crew to run a CV in my rear shaft when I did my dual case set-up. I love it. no problems what so ever. Allows for more angulation in the shaft before it binds.

move the front CV to the rear and the rear flanges to the front. non cv front will droop more than a cv. only need a cv in the front if you want to run around at speed in 4wd. the rear cv lets you run duals and lift without extreme driveline angles.

I am running 1986 CV front style drivelines front and rear with long travel spline, retubed with 1/4" thick wall tubing.  My drivelines are candy caned from my old 33" tires but in 10 years I have never had to replace anything on the drivelines.
