I bought an 87 4Runner that needed an engine. I had an 22re engine that i picked up & the guy said it came from an 85 4Runner & that it only had about 30,000 miles. Put they engine in but before I did that I replaced the water pump. I have had the engine in it for a little over a year & it started leaking at the top through the gasket  ??? I took it apart & look at the gasket were it was leaking & noticed that it only had about 1/16" to 1/8" at the most of contact  ??? I got a closer look & noticed that the water pump had a different shape than the cover but bolted up no problem  ??? I went to Napa & had them look it up for an 87 & an 85. The water pumps were the same  ??? I knew that Toyota had the 22re in the Celica's. He check & found that the 84 Celca w/22re to be water pump I needed  :clap2:  ??? I thought that all the water pumps were the same. Here are the pic's so you can see the difference.

The top pic is the 85 22re.

The bottom is the 84 22re from a Celica.

I'm not sure  :dunno: I have to look at the blocks for castings. Maybe the timing covers are interchangeable  :dunno:

No, Im not running a Celica 22RE, but Ive worked on a few and dont remember the water pump being like that. The ones that Ive seen innerchange with a truck water pump. Maybe older celicas I dont know. One was an 1985, injected.
