I normally would recommend to go through Fresno (Hwy99 to Hwy180 East to Hwy168 East to Shaver Lake) but I think I am going to instead recommend you to use Hwy 145 through Madera. Just be careful with your speed. There are plenty of speed traps out in that area around Madera. I've got lots of friends who have gotten tickets driving on Ave 12 and Ave 14. The speed limit is only 55mph I think, whereas Hwy 168 its 65 mph all the way through Clovis.

From the North, that's the best way. If you go down to 180/168, you'll add at least a half an hour to the trip.

Take 145 out of Madera then go up through Friant. It will save you 20 to 30 minutes.

well, got home from the trail this afternoon. MINI SIMP, no slappin necessary. what a GREAT trail, not as i remembered it at all, but it was like a new trail to me. hadn't been there in 15 years or so. camp sites that i used are no longer there, and new ones are instead. we went in my wife's '80 toy p/u (registered for the MC07) and took a spare driveline, 2 j-arms, a drag link, and other assorted goodies, and broke the pitman arm (twice). thank god i carry a ready welder. i was told it is a class 10 trail, but to me it was a class 5 at best, not real hard to do, but a long trail. (i loved it) the guys i went with drove south of Fresno to Clovis ave., turned north back to Clovis, turned east on shaw, and north on academy. talk about takin the scenic route. i really liked the 145 fryant route myself. i wish i had taken some of your local phone #s. we drove our rig from reno to the trail, and home again, not trailering it. we came home with the trail fixed pitman arm because i couldn't find a replacement. aw well, we made it
