i have never really thought about recreational wheelin as an activity where you would wear a helmet. After reading a thread on pirate i wanted to hear what people think about it on here. I have hit my hear pretty good a few times and almost had my head hit by a heavy tool box in a roll over. Also wheelin in a buddies rig i hit my heard hard enough on the rollbar to leave a nice lump. I have thought about keeping a ProTec helmet in my truck for hard spots. Does anyone else wear a helmet while wheelin?

I don't, but after reading the Pirate thread, and seeing some of the pics, (especially the one at the bottom of page 1)  I think I may start keeping one in the truck

I am going to go over to the sporting goods store and grab one before MCR, probably one of the skate type helmets.  I read that thread too and have to agree, it is something we should see more of.  Maybe we help set a good example and more will follow.  I just don't ever want to become an example for greenies as to why wheeling should be banned.

I think it's a good idea to have one handy... I mean, if you're wheelin in a fairly simple area then just have it handy.  But once the trail starts to get hairy, it'd be a good idea to put it on

Yeah, but that's not the point.  I believe the point is whether or not regular everyday wheelers should be wearing helmets, and getting opinions on the matter.

I, for one, am going to get one

This is regarding helmets, is a bit off the main topic, and might upset some-

If people would like to wear a helmet, then that's cool as long as it is optional. If they start requiring us to wear helmets, then I will be extremely pissed.

It is my personal opinion that having a required helmet law for on road motorcycle riders, off road motorcycle riders, and any other ATV rider, if a required helmet law exists, IS AGAINST OUR RIGHTS.

I do not have any experience for off road use, so speaking for on road use, I think it is oppression, harassment, obstructive, limiting, restraining, constricting, and any other synonym word for a restriction you can come up with. Do I wear a helmet when I ride on road? Yes because it is a requirement by law. Would I wear a helmet when I ride on road if it was not a requirement by law? Only if I wanted to. Period.

The can just got opened up, now lets see some worms jump out! :moods: :moods: :moods: :moods: :moods: :moods: :moods: :moods:

I agree totally.  Right now is not the time to address this... especially with what's going on with the FS.  I know for now it's just a matter of opinions.... but we don't want it to escalate to more than that legally.

I agree. I think is should be an option as well. I also think riding a motorcycle on road should also be an option. However, I would still wear a helmet if it was not a law.

I feel that seatbelts fall under the same category.  Sure, they're a great idea, and no one will deny that they save lives.  But it should be MY choice whether I wear one or not, not the government's

Wow, cool, I thought I was gonna get :flamer: for bringing it up :gap:

FFC, I understand

In my opinion, if I was just riding 1/2 mile to pickup some snacks, wearing a helmet wouldn't even cross my mind. Plus it would be one less thing to lock on the bike or carry around the store. If I was driving downtown on the freeway, you can bet I'll have my helmet on. I don't know how riders with what I like to call "brain buckets" (non-full faced helmets) can ride 80 mph with no sun glasses on and no windscreen. I've tried keeping my visor up on the freeway. Even with glasses on my eyes turn into niagara falls. :eye: :eye:

agree on the helmet and seatbelt views that yall have. its an infringment on our rights. i wear my helmet on my motorcycle, helps keep the bugs and road debree off of my face and out of my hair. with a seatbelt, in every wreck that i've been in i have never, repeat never had my seatbelt lock. helped my ex girlfriend in the last wreck i was in because hers locked (kept her from going through the windshield), i didnt even budge (45mph t-bone into an envoy that didnt pay attention to her stop sign).

I might agree if we weren't trending toward a welfare state, but the more we taxpayers have to pick up the tab for those not wearing seatbelts/helmets without their own insurance, the more I think they should have to wear them.

I don't wear a helmet in my truck. I do wear one on dirt bikes but not on the street. The idea of keeping one in the truck for the hard lines doesn't work for me because almost every time I have rolled a truck or wrecked a bike I was in what I considered easy terrain and just screwed up. If I had a helmet with me it would have been sitting in the x cab just waiting to knock the crap out of me.
I don't agree with the gov. making me wear a seat belt or helmet. The insurance is paid and I will kill myself if I want to.

DTB I can just barely make out your helmet in that pic.

If I may share a story about the "I'm just running over here real quick" way of thinking.  :psss:
We were at Glamis last year in Oct. and on Sun. morning this guy in a buggy  decided to go spin "one last quick donut" near camp at the foot of the hill (something he's probably done many times before as we all have) when it stood on one wheel and rolled over. During the roll he was ejected partially and his head was hit by the cage from the buggy. He was unconscious and bleeding for the whole time before the paramedics arrived. He was bleeding terribly and needed serious medical attention.  :yikes: Glamis, as some of you know, doesn't lend itself to real immediate response because of it's geographical nature. Prevent injury if possible, please, at all cost.
Needless to say, he wasn't wearing a seatbelt or a helmet. The seatbelt in this instance would have made all the difference.  Helmet? maybe not so much.
I just hope that while we feel infringed upon it doesn't make us careless for ourselves or our loved ones just because we want to be defiant of "the man". This is the one topic and very rare I might add, that I feel they were right (opinoin, of course).
I just really would hate to think that anyone thinking, "I'm too cool for this crap", would end up another statistic. I for one would also be very saddened to hear of news like this from or about anyone we know here.
The defiancy is natural but dying stupidly over something simple isn't.  :usa:

I do by personal preference wear my harness at all times when wheeling.

ahhhaahaha yea i dont usually wear one when i'm wheeling! probably a good idea though! I've bumped my head pretty damn hard a few times. I used to ride motorcycles until the BAD wreck (slid on my face for about 50 ft grinding thru the front of the helmet) I dont ride bikes anymore after that lol.....and driving I always wear my seatbelt (on the road) not to protect me from myself but from the other jackasses on the road.
