Propane legal onroad in Oregon?
« on: Jul 29, 2007, 09:57:06 AM »
it's been a long time since I've checked in here... deployment after deployment have kept me away... but I'll be home in Oct(ish) and have a few plans in mind... one is a Propane converson...

as the title says... is the propane legal in oregon for on-road use?  I'm think'n about doing the conversion to my 86 when I get back from Iraq... here in a couple months... but it's my daily driver... so it has to be legal above all...

but also... I can't think of the current price of propane per gallon... so would it even make sense?  i'll be wheeling it... but in the winter months it'll be my daily driver... (summer I have my crotch rocket)

any insight?

yes it is legal here in Oregon.  I've seen 2 2wd.  trucks around the Portland/Salem area that run on propane, and I have a friend in the Sisters area that has an 84 4wd toyota that he daily drives and it runs on propane.  He said that he drives about 10 miles a day; 5 days a week, and it would take 210 days then he would be saving money on fuel.  for on road propane I believe that on road propane will run you $2.28 per gallon, but it could be a few cents less or more but not much.  If my 4runner was not fuel injected then I'd convert mine to propane

The only downfall to running propane, is the availability of gas stations that sell propane!  Less and less stations are selling propane!

What about refueling at propane distributors -- or is that not allowed?

well I'm pretty sure I can get a large tank... how much does one of the small tanks used for bbq's hold?  5gal?  I'm think'n the tank/tanks i might have a line on are 15-20gal....  :dunno:

Toyo478... what's your friend get for milage?  and what's his range?  (also what's his tank size?)

stocker... the tanks I'm getting I'll make sure they're removeable... so i don't think I'll have a problem with them filling them up... I'll just unhook the tank, take it out... fill it up and throw it back in...  hummmm...

he is getting 19-20 mpg's he has a 10 gallon forklift tank and gets right around 200 miles on it.  I believe that you can fill up at propane distributors,  I believe it may actually be cheaper to fill up at a gas station because then you are not paying road tax but I may be wrong.  I called a local propane distributor (Pacer Propane) and asked them what it cost per gallon for a vehicle and it was $2.28, gas stations were at $2.25.

the big bbq propane tanks are 20 pound tanks.....

however, these tanks are not suitable for use as a vehicle fuel system.... our tanks at work on our forkilfts are a lot more sturdy and last quite awhile, i htink they are at least a 30 pound thank

He thinks that he may actually have more power than before, or at least their was no noticeable difference in power.  I'd just get 2 10 gallon tanks and use them both if you are going on a long trip otherwise you would probably be just fine with 1 10 gallon tank.

Propane tanks are usually measured in pounds (lbs) so your standard BBQ grill tank is 20 lbs (about 5 gallons).
