How do you register a F-toy or Buggy?

This has made me scratch my head for some time..

now with a f-toy you can figure out what the vehicle was by looking at the VIN numbers on the frame BUT.. if you've got a buggy made of nothing but tubing, drivetrain and skin's. How do you register this for offroad use only?   what kind of information do you need to bring to DMV?  or do you need to bring anything?   when they ask you what type of vehicle is this.. do you just reply "misc"   lol.. or?

I'm just curious, thanks

I know of a cupple people having to get a Vin # put on their rig so they could apply for a green sticker. CHP issues the VIN's out so maybe start there.

When you bought your base truck/4-Runner, you should have gotten a title with it.  If California, you can simply apply for a Green Sticker and non-op the street registration.  That's how I handled mine.

you'll need a bill of sale for some of the major parts to take to the dmv ...then they'll give you a form to take to the chp...make an appointment at the chp to get a vehcle verification and vin...they will install the vin on the tube frame for you...then you go back to the dmv with the paperwork w/ your new vin and get your green sticker.

The bill of sale I brought was just a reciept for my chassis, axles and tranny..the lady just glanced at it(you could probably print it out yourself)
The chp officer let me pick where I wanted to put my vin (within reason I'm sure) I had him put it on a tube I could transfer to anther buggy if I chose to

I've done it several times here in AZ.  It's basically exactly what Aaron said, here you end up with a current year "special construction vehicle"...the biggest issue here is that in five years you become emmission eligable...I guess you pull the vin and start all over at that point....haven't gotten there yet.  In addition, for us you need receipts for 50% of "claimed value".  I have also heard that in CA you guys have a VERY limited number of "special construction" titles that are allowed every year, but I certainly can't verify that....could very well be interweb heresay?

MT4Runner

I wouldn't say mine is perfectly legal, but I registered mine in MT as an '86 4Runner.

USFS is mostly concerned about having a registration of some sort.
Need a reg in my home state to be ok in CA when I come down for KOH--and I doubt CA/BLM are up on MT law enough to question me.  I have a license plate, and my registration has both my '86 VIN and my plate # in case anyone needs to see it.

I don't drive it on the street, as it is not street legal...but could be pretty easily made street legal enough for MT.

FYRDUDE

I just used my title and told it was now off road only and I wanted a green sticker. Done. Pretty simple. I first tried a dual reg. the first time ewith my f-toy that turned out to be a nightmare. Don't suggest that route.

crawlinrunner

I had an 84 4runner that i used to build the ftoy. As far as the law is concerned it is reg and insured as the 4 runner. As long as i dont miss a payment everything should be good.  ;)
