3.0 gets York for OBA
« on: Jul 04, 2007, 02:32:19 PM »
I have wanted a York A/C compressor for OBA for a long time. As most of you know, there is not a lot of room under there on a V-6. While spending a day at the local P-N-P I came across a Volkswagen Scirocco with this pump. It is a York Super-Compact Mini Model with the intake and exhaust ports on the back, not on top of the head. This pump is 8.70 cu.in. Which is the same size as the standard York model 209. The standard model 210 is what most people try to get, it is 10.3 cu. In.

I do not have any dimensions on the mount I fabbed up, it was a make as you go type thing. It is mounted in the same as the stock rotary compressor and uses the stock belt tensioner.

I have a seven-gallon tank mounted under the bed, and empty to 120 P.S.I. it takes a little less then a minute to fill.

Seem to be working now, I think the host was down yesterday. It was an 82 I think.

OOPS,

What tensioner is this from?

This weekend I am installing my RV2 in a tight area between my engine block and frame rail, and I wanted to built a pivot bracket and an upper bracket so I could swing the compressor out light an alternator to tighten the belt, but I am tight on space. I wanted to avoid using another bearing; wanted to reduce the amount of moving parts, drag, weight, etc. But after seeing this it is soooooooo much more simple than what I was planning on doing. Spring loaded tensioner is much easier to setup-

I'll head to the yard to find that compact tensioner ASAP!

From this website www.jedi.com , you find alot of great info on each York pump specs, OBA setups, parts lists, etc.---mostly on Heeps but good all the same.  On that site I read about plugging up the oil galley and I thought i would post the mod up here.

I don't have any BEFORE pics, but notice the small set screw in the housing on the upper right side of the shaft.

Just drill and tap the hole for the screw...not too deep though, just enough to set it (set screw) back flush with the housing.  Make sure to cover the bearing with a damp cloth or something to prevent shavings from getting in those nice bearings!  All this mod does is keep your pump from slinging oily grime on your 200HP LCE motor, so if your engine pees out oil anyway, then it may not be worth it. Hope this helps!

Also check out the PBB FAQ for drawings of mounting utilizing factory 22r A/C bracketry by 4rnrRick and others.  You may not need to tweek it much to fit alongside the 3RZ.

Thankyou for the information. I am going to build my OBA right the first time, and this means that there is NO WAY I would ever consider using a York

I will check on the tensioner pulley. We have a couple 3.slows here

Mike, just get it over with.....send me your motor.  Seriously though, post up your install and pics of the pump...I may just save this YORK for a boat anchor, punk.

I just checked and this is not the case.

I know I need a serpentine tensioner like this, so his specific one won't work for me, but its such a more simply idea than what I was going to do, so looks like I am going to hit the wrecking yard in search for a small compact spring loaded tensioner like that.

Thanks
Mike

ohhh yeah, I will be fully documenting my OBA install for sure. I want to air up my four 37" tires from 0 to 33 psi simultaneously in under 4 minuets. :bling:
