Great pics!
We need a full write up. :yesnod:

OK, I was contacted about two year ago by Dave in Australia. He would email me asking me tech question, suspension setups and info on roll cage. Pretty much anything dealing with Toyota's and rock crawling. About a year ago he emails me asking if I would be interested in coming out for a few weeks to work on trucks. He had several people that wanted work done by some who new what they were doing. { I don't no why he would ask a jackass like me } So we kept in touch and nothing really ever come about. Three month ago he contacts me and said how does October sound. So Casey, my wife and I went out.

First off things are allot different down there. Very very few people have welders and torches at there houses. So before we arrived Dave and crew scrounged up a welder, torches, grinders, drills and what ever else they didn't have. In the process of the builds I "think" Casey burned up two grinders and a drill.

On the truck we did a full suspension, right hand x-over steering, install/heavily modify the cross member and install dual cases. They had already done a body lift and with moving the steering box through the core support I had to build a new steering shaft. This kind of work was fairly new to these guys so we had them hands on grinding and fitting.

Casey was a HUGE help and I know we wouldn't have gotten the two projects done in three days.

On the Surf/4Runner I did some tube work. Mike the dude who owns the surf was hands on all the way. They bought a pipe bender and he wanted to know how to use it. I bent up some of it and I showed him every step of the process. Then it was time for him to start bending. He didn't want to but he sucked it up and went for it. He learned quick. I also showed him how to notch with a chop saw. He's never seen that. From what they told me people the dont notch they get a bolt or something to fill the gap. Now that he can bend some pipe he need to polish up his welding skills.

A few days later after site seeing and going none stop we finally got to wheel. We hooked up with three other trucks at the local wheelin spot. It rained that nigh so there wasn't any dust but lots of mud. First we did a shake down on the two rig to make sure nothing fell off. We did a loop they call fence line which is a good climb with deep deep ruts and drop offs. Then we went over to a small stair step and everyone made it with no real drama. All this time we have been building up to go up Bobs Hill. Bob's Hill is the Hill to climb in Western Australia. From what I under stand there aren't to many people that can make it up. Chris is the owner of the truck and has never tried it and has very little experience in a rock crawler. So we made him go up first. I was spotting for him and I took him over every big rock on the Hill. Chris conquered Bobs on his first try. He was white knuckled with a huge smile all the way up. Next Mike came up in the Surf. Mike is a good technical drive who got hung up twice but was able to make it to the top. He has done it several times before. He also gave the new tubes a good work out. Hayden the guy with the yellow 4Runner had some trouble at the gate keeper but did get by it. He got about over half way up and got the front tires against a ledge and the rear tires in a hole. Once we got him past that he got hung up on the last big obstacle. He humped that spot for a while and was getting pissed. He asked me if I would take it up the rest of the way up. I told him no, but I would spot him out of it. I am really glad I didn't jump in the drivers seat. Ten feet later the left front steering arm broke off. After closer inspection there was only one stud holding the Y arm on. The other three had been broken long enough to rust over. We got him squared away and on the trailer. No one else tried Bobs Hill that day. We all had a great time.

I really want to thank Casey for going with me and all the work he put in.
Dave, Kim, Chris and Mike thanks for bringing me out. I would do it again in a second. Casey, my wife and I feel like we have family down there and it was difficult to leave.

Thanks,
Jason

Hey Jason

Good write up and thanks for coming down you can come back anytime just remember no ice ok!!

Was Great to see you your wife and casey we had a blast while you were here now we are just geting back to our laid out lifestyle.

Learnt a lot of little tricks and got some stuff reinforced to people about there steering components maybe now they will listen hey?.

Good old bobs hill always claims some carnage either panels or broken driveline :pokinit: so it was good the 2 trucks we built hehe made it to the top unbroken and unaided.

So next time we meet will prob be at the hammers and we can meet some of the brawlers there hopefully and learn some more techniques in crawlin the rocks.

Cheers Big Ears

Dave
