Cleaning input splines?
« on: Jun 18, 2007, 02:11:30 PM »
What's the best method of cleaning the input splines that has a coating of rust?

I was thinking of a brush with brass bristles to not scratch the metal, or a 3m scotch brite pad, like on the back of the kitchen sink sponge!  What would be the best stuff to clean it with?  Use the same stuff I've been using on cleaning the crude off my parts!  And just give it a light coat oil/grease?
Should I use some engine cleaner on the bell housing?  I was told brake cleaner, but it ain't doing anything!  Any info would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Wire wheel on a drill or grinder or glass beads.

Water for the clutch dust and engine cleaner for the grease.

Don't be afraid of scratching the splines, they are hardened.

Oven cleaner works good on that kind of gunk. I would say either the front seal on the trans or the rear seal on the engine is definitely leaking.

It's definitely the front and rear main's were leaking!  I was told the motor was using quite a bit of oil when it was running!  Previous owners said after a 40 mile drive the oil would be a qt low!  It looks like the tranny has been gone through in it's 202,000 mile journey!  The main goal is to get the motor running and then have the tranny and transfercase gone through later!  (If needed)

That works too, but beware it may turn the aluminum black.
