« on: Jun 12, 2007, 08:12:48 PM »
wanting to know what my options are, went to 529s and a 4.7 tcase now I need tires to match, gotta be bigger then a 36.5 OD  so figuring 37s or 38s, but want them WIDE, LIKE SUPER WIDE, but dont think I want 38.5s       What would be  a good tire......need it good for mud and rock
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

pitbull rockers run a 37x13.5   I can get a 37x14 irok and they are only 207.00 a peice I could get a 36x16 bogger, but dont really like boggers much, although they might be alright out in the mud

why do I want wide tires? or why do I not like boggers? I want wide tires to try and put the outer edge of the tire out farther without moving the CENTER of the tire out as far, I dont think that the center of your tire should be out farther then your fender......one, I think it looks like crap, two, I think that its better for your bearings becuase the less distance between the inside egde of your tire to the center of your bearings the less leverage there is on flat ground, but the farther out your tire is, the wider your stance is, making a rollover less likely to happen. Ive already rolled my truck once....lucky for me I landed in sand that conformed to my trucks body not doing too much body damage before I get an exocage. Problem is, there is more mud and flat trails here then rock, so I play in the mud, but I prefere the rocks, meaning I wanted my truck really tall to fit big tires under my truck, like 38s, to get through deep mud, but dont want full width becuase I couldnt fit between trees, and I think it looks bad, but I take it in rocks and roll it.......

BOGGERS ARE HEAVY, UGLY, AND NOISY.......keepin that one short

I was asking why you wanted wide tires...

First - the widest point is going to determine the stress on the bearings, but I agree about the stability - wider is better.

Wider doesn't always mean more traction offroad though. A lot of times, it takes unit pressure to get the tire to squish or key into the rock to get max traction

so you mean to tell me that even though there is an area of support mounted beneath the bearings....it wont support the weight different then a 1 inch wide tire with the same  outer stance, dont make any sense to me.....I realize it wont be a HUGE difference, but, it should do something. so adding an inch to farth out will put more stress on the bearings but adding an inch inward wont make the same difference in the oppisite?

Im more looking at stability, width of tire is MOSTLY for looks, to not put a 38x9.5 tire out there, where I could look down from my bed and see my axles......nasty

I agree with ~tc~. The pressure per area (traction) increases as the area of contact decreases.

I'm sure many here have seen that orange 8-tire Suzuki Samurai, dual tires at each corner? Well I watched it last year try to drive over a slick granite rock near Buck Island Lake on Rubicon, and after about 10 mins of being continuously denied, a Toyota with 37x12.50 MTRs went right up the exact line with little effort. I think the tires on the Sami were 36 or 38" Swampers, combined width of at least 25" per corner..... Of course the longer wheelbase of the Toyota helped, but the Sami couldn't make any progress at all.

Running double-tires on the lightest trail rig: :slap: I know it was built just for show, painted bright orange, but I knew it was a poor idea the second I saw it.

Big Mike - I saw that same Sami years ago at a Donner competition.  Believe it or not he was the only one to make one of the obstacles.  It was an extremely steep climb with a v-notch at the top.

I don't care for wide tires, I am running 37x12.5 MTRs and love them, however other people have their likes.

I might just end up with the 37x14 iroks, cheap tires that arent too bad a size or pattern......I just hope I dont break a birf, Im gonna be running lockrights front and rear, hydro stearing and 37s, not big enough for me to rack up credit cards for longfeilds. not to mention a set of locking hubs to get rid of my warns, but enough to break my stock junk

not a fan of wide tires... 12.5 in my eyes are perfect. if your wheelin mud you want a tall skinny tire to cut through it. for rocks tall wide tire for more surface are on the rocks. so put the two tires together and you get a 12.5 good for mud or rocks!  :therethere:

just look in a magazine and it will tell you the widest 37 or 38 you can get but if your looking at more mud and little trail runs might as well go boggers if your not driving on the rode too much

wow thats bringing back an old post... lol, went with the 35x16x15 boggers afterall, and boy were they noisy... especially if I took them over 80mph... then they were noisy and scary. lol
now Ive sold the truck, and the tires... and left with an oddball set of rims not worth much... lol

Yeah wide tires ended up not working out so well in the end... probably wont do it again... next rig will probably have 36" irocs... cheap and get the job done

guessing he didnt get that the originator of the post, has "been there, done that" and returned more informed.
wide tires arents all that, seen alot of plain jane iroks do ALOT more damage.... ALTHOUGH my toyota with the 4cyl
locked with the 35x16x15 boggers. started some massive ruts that got the guy with 42? inch iroks under a one ton blazer STUCK.... lol, but I think he was doing the same thing I was. stopped to enjoy the mud a little too much
