ifs rearend, 2x4=4x4?
« on: Apr 07, 2004, 02:00:16 PM »
Just purchased a set 2" wheel spacers for the front of my 84 Runner from Marlins shop. I am now committed to the wider ifs rear end. Exactly what rear ends will bolt in and are the 2x4 and 4x4 the same? On Daves recomendation at the shop, "Thanks Dave", I went to a wrecking yard in South Fresno where I found 4 4x4 rearends at a cost of 450$ each. Ouch! I think I can find one cheaper if I go on a hunt.

Why do you need spacers??  My 84 has an ifs rear and you'd probably need a straight edge to see the difference.  I was going to buy some too until I got the axle in.  Glad I saved my $$.

The 2x4 and 4x4 rearends aren't the same.  The 2x4 is a Toyota 7.5" and the 4x4 is a Toyota 8".  And another difference is that the 2x4 is 5 lug and the 4x4 is 6 lug.

anther ? to throw in the mix. isant a 84 going to have a wide axle in it already?  86 was the frist year for it but its still the same body style? isant it? so way the need for spacers up front if going with an IFS rear?  heak, don't you have the same rear now? (obveyusley not a V-6 rear)

Nope.  The wide axle didnt start till the ifs era so the trackwidths would match up.  All solid axle rigs had the narrow rear.

No the solid axle trucks have more offset than the ifs era trucks.  I think that you can use some of the stock alloy wheels from the ifs era but not all of them will fit on the older stuff due to the offset and wheel/caliper contact.

yep that would do it.  Heres a pic of the 94, notice that tires stick out a bit.  If I put those wheels and tires on a 85 and prior they wouldnt stick out.  But on a ifs axle they stick out about an inch and a half.

the 84 axle is narrower by three inches than an 86 we put my mags from my 84 on a friends 86 truck and it was a lot wider and the tires stuck out all the way around.
