what is the ultimate engine ?
« on: Jun 02, 2007, 04:44:09 PM »
so my son and I are buildin' a Trekker

Fairly new frame sittin' undernieth the back 1/2 on the trailer .. so were starting from frame up.  My boy is 11 so we have time  to do it right ..

with Fuel prices the way they are , and what they might be in 5 years  .. I'm considering diesle maybe a 4cyl Comings , like in some of the excovators here  ..

I'm really "hemming and hawing" between keeping it "stock"  or custom

hmmmmmm?

Well they are pretty custom to start with, if it were me I'd go custom. Are you talking about the 4B or 4BT Cummins?  I am sure some one has done it so there should be info out there, infact i think a guy on here posted one up cant remember exactly but it was a 4BT Toyota.  I think you would be dollars ahead with a well built 22r or 22RE you could get around 20mpg.

the 4bt is cool but tips the scales at 750 lbs. i would look at the toy diesels if you want a diesel or maybe even a VW diesel

Thats the engine I have in 2001 SR5, except the intercooler, its very nice. I get about 11 Litres per 100Km country driving.

I think you would be dollars ahead with a well built 22r or 22RE you could get around 20mpg.

i actually think the 22r is a very capable engine... i love mine... and its easy to work on... ive replaced teh head, and timing chain, so really there isnt too much left other than the block and crank/pistons... very reliable, readily available and decent gas mileage

If I had the money I would put the VW 1.9LTDI in my 4Runner  It has 100 hp & 177 lb/ft of torque all stock & a friend is getting around 48 mpg in a Jetta. I know there is a weight difference between the Runner & the VW but a diesel engine likes to work & fuel mpg should be close. I've been checking this out & if you have the money you can get 200+hp. I don't know what the weight of the 1.9L is but I'm sure it's less than the Cummins 4B series. You might be dollars ahead now but in the long run I think the diesel will be worth it cause you will be getting almost if not twice the mpg than a 22R or RE  :twocents:

Yes I'm in BC , Canada .
I have been tossing the 2LT (2.4L turbo diesle toyota) engine idea around as well .. there are quite a few of those engines kickin around .. and much easier for me to get ahold of then the 4BT . I also like the idea of staying all toyota . A customer of mine is getting 43MPG  in his 84 2L non turbo ..

The diesels that these trucks came with weren't very good.

2L/2LTE are proving to be fairly unreliable, like yota tony said.  The aforementioned 1kzte is a much better built and much stronger engine, though mileage does suffer a little.  Doesn't take much to make more power, but stock they're on par with a 22re hp wise but have MUCH more torque.
